The year 2023 began with a blast as the world-renowned production studio, HBO, shook hands with Gaming icon, Naughty Dog, to adapt the masterclass story of The Last of Us. Starring Hollywood A-listers, Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, and more, the television adaptation of the sensational game became an instant hit. 

The initial season of the HBO Max series adapted the first part of the game, focusing on the journey of Joel and Ellie, played by Pascal and Ramsey respectively. Witnessing the grand success of the series, HBO soon green-lit the production of the next seasons, adapting the sequel parts of the saga. 

So far, it has been made clear that, unlike the initial installment, the next part of the story will be divided into multiple seasons, delving much deeper into the nuances of the grim world of The Last of Us. Recently in an interview with The Deadline, co-writer, and showrunner, Craig Mazin shared some more behind the scene insights about the upcoming season. 

Craig Mazin Shares Last of Us season 2 details

In the interview Mazin shared that season 2 is still in the “scripting phase” and they have decided to shoot it in British Columbia instead of the game’s original location, Seattle. Also, he added they have, “quite a bit of story to tell” and for that, they “should be around for a while.”

The names behind the success of the Last of Us television series were Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann. The latter is the original creator of the gaming series who helped Mazin develop an adaptation that is as true to the source as possible. Resulting in an adaptation that would proceed to be considered one of the key works that broke the curse of video game adaptations.

So far there hasn’t been any specific date regarding the release of the second season yet. However, the insiders believe that a potential date between 2024 and 2025 may not be impossible. So far sources have confirmed that the original cast from season 1 will be returning alongside some brand-new faces.
