On June 8, Geoff Keighley presented the gaming community with one spectacular showcase of games. The Summer Game Fest 2023 had everything the fans needed. It was filled with excitement for new reveals like Mortal Kombat I and also had some updates coming for established games like Call of Duty. However, apart from these well-established games, there were also some indie games that left their mark on fans.

Indie games have always been a niche market in the gaming industry. Their quirky concepts and even quirkier art style are what sets them apart from mainstream games. Fans who are looking to try some indie games should look no further as an array of indie titles graced SGF 2023. Below is the list of top ten games fans should definitely add to their indie gaming lists.

Fans of puzzle-based RPGs will definitely love this title from Sad Owl Studios. In this game, players control an instant camera that alters the reality around them with its photos. This indie title is a development achievement with many critics praising its accurate physics and imaginative angle. This title will be available to play from July 18, 2023.

Été

Été, the French word for ‘Summer’, fully encapsulates the theme of the game. This game follows the story of a budding painter who explores Montreal in the summer. The players must tap into their creative side and paint the world in 3D to reveal its wonders.

Collecting stamps, creating artwork, and befriending fellow artists are all part of this chill painting game. There is no official release date yet for this title yet.

Cart Life

Moving on from the colorful 3D world of Été, this black-and-white 2D pixel art game has been developed by Richard Hofmeier. The game revolves around the story of three street vendors Andrus, Melanie, and Vinny as they serve their customers in a small city.

This title is expected to be released later this year as a story-based life simulator. According to the game page, players should “make every decision count”, a statement that increases the anticipation for this game even more.

Henry Halfhead

The game is exactly what the title says. Players control Henry, who is half a head. Sounds simple, right? The developers of Lululu Entertainment developed this game to be a chill puzzle-based sandbox game.

Henry has the ability to possess and control any object he touches. This helps him navigate through his not-so-ordinary everyday life. However, this title too does not have a release date just yet.

Helskate

The Tony Hawk series was a breakthrough in skateboard-based video games. But the developers of the game thought they could create more than that. With the idea from YouTuber Kwebbelkop, this title is a new rogue-like skateboarding game. The mechanics and graphics in the game can rival that of a mainstream title.

Players should master the art of skateboarding to slay the demonic creatures in Vertheim. Players can wall ride and even skate on electrical wires to roam around in Vertheim. There is no release date yet for this Phantom Coast title. Early access is open for interested fans.

Summerhill

This game follows a simple story of a young shepherd and his dog. Players should traverse the ancient landscape created using low-poly elements. The players should collect back as many of their flock as they can.

This Land & Sea title also has some themes of mystery and puzzles in it. It has a folk-inspired soundtrack by Todd Baker. The studio is formed by a critically acclaimed development team who were behind zen games like Alto’s Adventure & Alto’s Odyssey.

Hauntii

Players can take on the role of Hauntii as it traverses through this realm of Eternity. Furthermore, Hauntii has ghostly powers with which it can possess the environment around it and also its inhabitants to solve multiple puzzles. While the combines puzzles with shooting action, the real selling point for this game is its art style.

The games feature a fully hand-drawn art style that mesmerizes the fans along with the zen music in the background. This Moonloop Games title is expected to be released in 2024.

COCOON

If players thought the earlier titles were confusing, this Geometric Interactive title will blow their minds. Created by the unique concept from Jeppe Carlsen, players can jump between worlds through the orbs. Furthermore, they can carry the orbs on their back and solve puzzles by mastering this mechanic.

Each world orb has unique abilities of its own. But obtaining these orbs is also not a simple task, as players must defeat mighty guardians protecting these world orbs. The release date for this title is also not set in stone as of now. This Shape Shop title drops later this year for the fans to enjoy some life simulations on Mars.

Mars First Logistics

Thus cel-shaded physics simulation games are for the ones who love inventing things. Players should build rovers that can survive the rocky terrain of Mars and transport cargo along with them. Successful delivery of cargo will grant players money that they can use to develop their settlements.

Saltsea Chronicles

This 2D game developed by Die Gute Fabrik takes the players on a mystery adventure. A Captain’s rag-tag group must heist their confiscated ship and carry out a rescue.

Elements of the sea world beautifully captured in the art style will make fans addicted to this game. The title is also releasing later this year taking fans on an exciting adventure.
