“THEY DON’T MAKE GAMES!”: Epic Games CEO Takes a Furious Dig at Apple and Google

If you had to predict the top 3 revenue generators from the gaming industry, there are only limited options for a rational guess. But what if the actual data included two of the most unexpected entries at the top? However, the latest leaked analytics suggest a similar twist. To everyone’s shock, Apple and Google have been revealed among the leading giants of gaming back in 2021. No surprise, the Epic Games CEO didn’t seem too glad on the news.

Microsoft vs. FTC leaks have been inviting trends and theories for a while now. With each passing day, there’s a new buzz incepted as the data leaks keep on unfolding for Xbox. This time the leaks were about the business performance of industry giants for the year 2021. And after the shocking data surfaced on the web, it left the other gaming developers rather furious. The Epic Games CEO didn’t shy away from sharing his fierce unfiltered opinion in the same.

Among all the confidential information leaked from Microsoft’s legal proceedings, fans were subjected to a top 10 ranking of highest revenue generators in 2021. Making predictions for which companies could make it to the top 10 is probably an easy guess. But two of the names at the top tier couldn’t be in a gamer’s wildest of predictions. 

Apple was placed at the fifth rank allegedly generating a revenue of around 15 billion dollars. Moreover, Google stood at rank 3 bagging a net revenue of 18 billion dollars according to the leaked statistics. What’s more surprising is the fact that Google was even able to surpass Xbox. Other giants that couldn’t catch up to the success of both companies include Nintendo, Valve, EA, and Activision Blizzard.

A social media user shared the fascinating data on X. As you can see, the PUBG owners Tencent had the crown back in 2021 followed by Sony in second. However, the difference in revenues hints at the impact of Tencent back in 2021.

This list didn’t sit well with the Epic Games CEO. Tim Sweeney, the Epic Games chief reacting to the news wrote, “Seeing Apple and Google in the top of the game revenue charts, making tens of billion of dollars every year, is disgusting. THEY DON’T MAKE GAMES! They just place an unwanted and useless toll both in front of games made by others.”

Even though the list takes the data from the year 2021, the results are still more than surprising.

The possible changes in 2023 

A lot of fans believe that Tencent’s domination back in 2021 is highly attributed to the COVID-19 effect. Due to the pandemic, the enthusiasm around mobile gaming witnessed a huge spike possibly helping both Google and Apple from the same. 

Now, two years post the analytical source, there are a lot of possible changes that might have taken place. For instance, the revenue gap between Sony and Microsoft would have been narrowed down a lot considering the hype around Xbox in 2023. Also, taking Nintenod’s recent golden run into consideration, there’s an expected jump from that year’s ranking.

There’s one certain conclusion that needs no debate. Over time, the competition has only gotten intense and it’s been some of the best growing years to be an eSports enthusiast.
