Gran Turismo 7 is now recognized as a sport that players can compete in to win an Olympic medal. The Olympic Esports Series is designed to be an annual event that follows the format of the Olympic Games, where multiple virtual sports and video games are featured. While Gran Turismo 7 is one of the games that players can partake in, other games like Tennis Clash, Fortnite, Just Dance, and Chess.com have also made their way to the roster. Getting gold is the goal for every player, and how Kylian Drumont did it left viewers stunned.

While traditional eSports and competitive video gaming were not categorized as sports, the Olympic Movement showed interest in eSports as early as 2007. In 2023, the official Olympic Committee hosted the Olympic Esports Series. Fans witnessed some of the best gamers in the world showcasing their skills. And the official Twitter page of the organization has shared a throwback post featuring the winner of the first Gran Turismo event.

In a recent clip posted on Twitter, the Olympic Games page posted a clip of Kylian Drumont’s victory in the Gran Turismo event. The clip showcased how Kylian won one of the most prestigious sports awards in the world.

The Frenchman won the inaugural event in Singapore back in June 2023.

Among all the games, many fans believe that Gran Turismo is one of the more fitting games to include in the Olympics. Gran Turismo is more of a racing simulator than a game. This means that the game tries to simulate real vehicles and operate them with realistic precision. While racing simulators are often classified as games, the sims are often quite difficult to master. This gives it the place it deserves in the Olympics.

Difference between sim racing and arcade-style racing

Gran Turismo is not like any other driving game. The simulator has been one of the most well-polished ones that are sold as games. Simulator games are very different compared to other racing games as there is a strong learning curve for simulators.

It is almost impossible for a player to pick up a simulator and even complete a race without going out of bounds once. This is because the simulators have realistic physics that makes cars in the game move just like they would in real life. In arcade racers like NFS, players have a strong driving assist that makes the vehicles much easier to drive.

Such games are made with the intention of making it easy for new players to get into. Simulators on the other hand focus on giving players a realistic driving experience of each vehicle. Simulators also account for parameters like fuel level, tire health, etc to make the experience more realistic.
