A lot of countries across the European continent have stringent laws put in place when it comes to gambling. Slovakia is no different. And when a Twitch streamer ended up streaming himself playing poker, all hell broke loose. The gambling regulatory authority of Slovakia, the URHH, didn’t take the incident lightly and took matters to court. What followed was a court order for all ISPs to ban dDandis’ channel on Twitch.

Twitch gets banned

As things stand right now, one ISP, namely O2, banned the whole platform in Slovakia. Despite Slavokia being not too fond of promotional activities concerning gambling, the URHH never actually demanded the entire platform be banned. So, banning Twitch entirely might have been a mistake on O2’s part. On the other hand, this could have been a deliberate move as well. Certain reports also claim O2 has fixed the problem after far too many complaints regarding people being unable to access the site.

dDandis seems to have amassed a decent following of over 34,000 people. His channel seems pretty uncontroversial, aside from the gambling content. He streams games like Counter-Strike, Battlefield V, and Z1 Battle Royale. The gambling content he has posted over time amounts to over 900 hours. And in a country so strict about gambling laws, that clearly hasn’t gone down well with the authorities.

Some people think Twitch is part of the problem and seem apprehensive of what the whole ordeal might mean for the platform.

Twitch contains a lot of gambling content which can be interpreted as promoting gambling. And the URHH has blocked a lot of gambling sites in the past. Even though they haven’t issued an order to ban the entire platform yet, who knows what the future holds.

How other ISPs deal with the situation remains to be seen. It is likely they will just ban the problematic channel.
