“Life imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life” – A famous quote by the great poet and writer Oscar Wilde that shows that the resemblance between life and art is uncanny. Thus, it can also be believed that art imitates art in some cases. The same can be seen in a video comparison between God of War Ragnarok and the Oscar-winning film The Revenant.

But the question that arises here is whether the beloved game took inspiration from the Oscar-winning film or was it something more than just an inspiration.

Video comparison shows a serious resemblance between God of War Ragnarok and The Revenant

The comparison video that was compiled by Gamespot showed both the fight scenes from God of War Ragnarok, where Kratos can be seen fighting Bjorn, the bear-form of Loki aka Atreus, who is also a sort of demi-God just like Kratos and resembles Thor in many ways in the actual Norse Mythology, to that of Leonardo DiCaprio‘s encounter with a Female Bear in the film.

But if looked carefully, it can be found that the bear fight works not just visually but as a set piece for both incidences. In the movie, the Bear fight is a pivotal point for the character of Hugh Glass, played by DiCaprio, to move his character forward, giving him the motive to take revenge on his old companions.

While for God of War Ragnarok, the fight signifies two things, first that despite all his strength, Kratos is somewhat old to fight a Bear, despite him being the ‘Killer of Gods’ in previous games, and second that the Bear is actually a transformation of Loki, learning his new abilities, thus moving the story forward for the game as well, and that too in a drastic way.

This shows that the scenes might not be a complete copy-paste of scenes, but are actually more of a weapon used by the directors and makers of the film and the game to provide a much more in-depth story than others.
