Sony’s desire to beat Xbox and other consoles

On PlayStation’s 20th anniversary, Deering gave some behind-the-scenes moments from the company’s journey in the console industry. He mentioned that from the beginning they had a targeted audience for each console they developed. For PlayStation 2, Sony specially targeted the 17 years. Hence, the advertisements brought colorful images that are cool enough to attract youngsters. PlayStation 2 was launched with a DVD player for $299. It was one of the most efficient and cheapest consoles compared to the available ones in the market.

Additionally, in 2001, Microsoft released its first Xbox challenging the console market owned by Sony. Looking at Microsoft’s market reputation in the United States, Sony felt threatened. Microsoft’s work with games like Halo brought clarity to Sony on the former’s expertise in FPS games and computer games. Since Sony was also dominating the genre of FPS, they brought the competition.

Deering’s statement confirmed that Sony delicately tried to defeat Microsoft after Xbox’s interesting market release. It was a healthy competition that charged the Sony developers to be more efficient with PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, or PlayStation 5-“We targeted Microsoft from day one — we were ruthless”. However, he mentioned how this competition brought a golden time for gamers. Deering also confirmed that Sony is far past that stage. Because of both PlayStation and Xbox, there were interesting developments and innovations in the consoles. Above all, Sony’s dedication to PlayStation finally brought the crown to the company.
