Valve’s latest take on Steam Deck is just mind-blowing. They gave their trusty handheld OLED display with HDR support and a much better battery. This handheld is already making the headline, as it appears that Valve listened to every single criticism fans had regarding the original Steam deck and worked on it. The result is this new console. One wonders: What does this console’s launch mean for the Nintendo Switch 2?

Nintendo Switch 2 has been one of the most anticipated announcements of 2023. It has not happened yet, and the Nintendo CEO’s recent comments suggest it might not happen anytime soon. But an updated Steam Deck with an OLED display suggests fans can hope for the best.

Valve’s revised hardware is not just a new display; this new console features a new 6nm processor, which means it requires less power and produces less heat. Over that, Digital Foundry has stated that this new console is around 8% more powerful than its original mode. To some, this might not be much, but it’s a lot when it plays a part in pushing a game’s fps from below 30 to 30. Also, it comes with a larger battery, giving at least 30 minutes of extra battery life while playing games like Cyberpunk 2077.

Nintendo’s upcoming unannounced console is said to be much more powerful than this, though. It is being suggested that Switch 2 would be at least as powerful as a PS4. Nintendo can easily go for a modern processor that is 6 or even 5nm to improve battery life and keep the system heat-free. Power-wise, too, if Nintendo does something similar to Deck, they can assure their fans they get to play games like Cyberpunk 2077 on medium settings, which is not a bad deal. Finally, Valve commendably kept the OLED model’s price the same as the previous models, going up to $649 for the 1TP model. Nintendo can learn from Valve how to keep their console’s price reasonable.

This is a great opportunity for Nintendo to make sure their next console is a great competition for others. It can also make sure that while doing that, their console is also available at a reasonable price, and then the Nintendo Switch 2 would win.

Does Nvidia have such a chip, though?

One must ask: Nintendo can get inspired by Deck OLED in making Switch 2, but they would only use an NVIDIA chip, unlike one from AMD. But this does not mean Nvidia lacks the resources or similar chips. Over the years, they have worked to build a powerful family of mobile chips. T239 is one such chip.

In some ways, it might end up being even more powerful and resourceful than the Steam Deck. Given the fact that it has dedicated hardware for ray tracing and DLSS, Let’s see where Nintendo takes all this technology and information.
