Sony’s PlayStation 5 is here to light up the holiday season! Since October 10 when Sony announced the PS5 Slim, fans have been super excited to get their hands on it. The main attraction of this console is its sleek look despite having so many hardware advancements. This left many fans wondering how Sony was able to accomplish that.

The engineering and design team at Sony has done a phenomenal job in developing this console. With the holiday season approaching, gamers will be looking to invest in the new PS5 Slim. But before that, they should know what is inside the console and whether it is worth buying or not. Now, that it is here, let’s take a deep dive into its mechanism and differences with the 2022 PS5.

First look at the design of the new PS5 version

First of all, gamers should know that PS5 Slim is not the official name. The term is coined by the community, thanks to the lower weight compared to earlier PS5s. At first look, the weight difference in both the generations of PlayStation 5 is fairly obvious. The digital version of the slim version is 800 grams lighter than the earlier one. On the other hand, the disc version of PS5 Slim is 700 grams lighter than the 2022 PS5.

But the biggest difference between the two iterations of PlayStation 5 after weight is their design. While the 2022 PS5 opted for a two-panel design, Sony has installed a quad-panel design in the slim version. This choice is receiving some criticism online from the critics. This is due to the fact the top two panels of PS5 Slim are glossy finish, while the bottom two are matte finish. However, this difference in textures has led many to call it ‘the uglier PS5’.

Another significant difference to notice between these two versions is that Sony has removed distinguished vents in PS5 Slim. Sony has also switched up the ports as the 2022 PS5 had one USB-A and one USB-C port. On the other hand, the slim version has two USB-C ports only in the front. However, the back panel has the same amount of ports in both versions – two USB-A ports, a LAN port, an HDMI port, and a power supply.

Removing the panels of the new version reveals the disk port is detachable using one press of thumb. The SSD drive can also be removed with only one screw. Sony has done a great job using less screws on the outer portions of the body. Looking inside the PS5 Slim, however, paints a different picture.

What’s actually inside PS5 Slim?

While the design is more compact in the new version, it still carries the same AMD Ryzen chip with a 6nm architecture. This means the power consumption and heating in both variants will be comparable for high-end games. However, Sony has brought in a new partner Foxconn with a 19-blade fan for cooling. Sony’s keeping the heat similar to the older version in a smaller system is a commendable fact in itself.

The heat sinks in the PS5 Slim are handled only have three radiators and heat pipes. Furthermore, the system is fitted with an AMD Ryzen Zen 2 CPU and an AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based GPU, along with a 1 TB storage. This means the smaller PS5 Slim should have been producing more heat than the 2022 version. But Sony succeeded in keeping the heating dissipation constant.

The placement of memory chips on the PS5 Slim has also changed. Earlier, Sony used 6 memory chips to distribute the 825 GB of storage available on it. The architecture of placing these 6 memory chips was what led Sony to have a faster processing time. However, they have changed this configuration with fewer memory chips and more storage.
