Microsoft’s takeover of Activision-Blizzard has received a green light. Judge Corley has denied FTC’s plea for a preliminary injunction on the deal, tipping the scale in Microsoft’s favor. With Microsoft taking this round of the console wars, the community is stoked as Xbox will now have direct control over multiple Activision titles. These will include Call of Duty and Overwatch.

Fans are excited to see how the Xbox Game Pass reflects this in the coming days. The acquisition will give players access to Activision titles as a bundle that will help to reduce costs significantly. However, CoD’s inclusion in the Game Pass is still uncertain. Reports suggest Sony’s existing deal with Call of Duty will remain intact for the remainder of 2023.

It’s easy to understand why Sony is a dominant name in the console industry. The PlayStation makers have tons of exclusive titles that help the PS sales tremendously. On the other hand, Xbox doesn’t really have something similar as most of its games are available on PC as well. This was also a strong argument for Microsoft in court.

Microsoft’s announcements had Sony running around to stop the deal from going through. Sony also got the Federal Trade Commission to request an injunction from the legal authorities. After a five-day-long session that involved Phil Spencer, Satya Nadella, and Jim Ryan, Judge Corley denied the injunction requests, making Microsoft fans sigh in relief.

However, Microsoft fans need to be aware that there may be a lot more to the story before engaging in premature celebrations.

CoD may not come to Xbox Game Pass right away

Despite Microsoft’s victory in this round, CoD may not be available to Xbox players for the $1 Game Pass just yet. Sony’s deal with Activision for CoD titles is still going to remain valid for 2023. Sony also has marketing deals for the current CoD games, which involve heavy promotion of the title with PlayStation consoles. A post on Twitter further reminded that in a previous hearing, UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said that CoD is unlikely to arrive to the Xbox Game Pass before 2025.

Still, the subject is highly debated in the community. It isn’t clear how the deal between Sony and Call of Duty has been designed. It’s not clear whether Sony has rights till the end of this year or if the deal expires when the next CoD title starts marketing.
