The Call of Duty franchise has earned the status of the best FPS gaming series of the last two decades. Thanks to a number of successful installments from publisher Activision, this IP is still growing by attracting new fans every year.

It seems like the tradition of putting out a new premium each year has been highly effective. So much so that most of the COD titles have now sold millions of copies worldwide. Some of them have even become iconic titles in the community. Are these the ones that have sold the best? Which title in the series has seen the best sales numbers?

Treyarch’s original Call of Duty Black Ops is the best-selling FPS from Activision

Yes, that’s exactly right – at least according to the report from a trusted insider. On X (formerly Twitter), Ralph has earned a reputation in the gaming community by dropping near-accurate COD leaks. A few days ago, he posted some information regarding the top 10 best-selling Call of Duty titles from Activision.

Surprisingly, Call of Duty Black Ops, from 2010, has topped this list. With 31 million sold units, Treyarch’s first offering in the Black Ops sub-series holds the number one spot. 2011’s original Modern Warfare 3 and 2019’s rebooted Modern Warfare from Infinity Ward are in the second and third positions, respectively. They both have sold 30 million copies each.

Speaking of the remaining titles on the list, 2020’s Black Ops Cold War is the fourth best-selling COD. It has sold 30 million copies since launch. Then comes the fan-favorite Black Ops 2, with 29 million sold units.

Furthermore, 2013’s Ghosts is also there, among other heavyweights. It is currently in the sixth position with 28 million sold copies. Then there’s another Treyarch game, Black Ops 3, in the seventh spot with 26 million sold units. Legendary installment Modern Warfare 2, from 2009, is eighth on the list with 25 million sold copies. The last two spots are taken by 2014’s Advanced Warfare and 2017’s WWII. Since launch, they both have sold 21 million and 19 million copies, respectively.

Meanwhile, hardcore Call of Duty lovers are currently waiting for the next major installment. Developed by Sledgehammer Games, Modern Warfare III will arrive later this year on November 10, 2023. It will be available on the PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X\S, Xbox One, and PC.
