If rumors are to be believed, Rockstar Games is ready to reveal its new masterpiece, GTA VI, sometime later this year. A very large part of the game was leaked late last year, but the company continued working on it. There is also a strong speculation that this game will only launch sometime next year.

Red Dead Redemption 3, on the other hand, is nowhere near its launch. The game is probably in the very early stages of development at the moment. But no matter when it comes out, it will be a success. But will it be more successful than GTA VI? Will either of these games shatter Avatar’s record?

Over the years, Rockstar Games has made games that have broken sales records. In 2009, Avatar became the movie that earned the most money in the shortest time ever. It was a marvelous bit of cinema, and it deserved the success that came with it. But its success was soon overshadowed by GTA V’s opening week earnings.

In 2013, GTA V broke Avatar’s record in a mere three days. It earned $1 Billion in its opening weekend. That effectively made it the fastest-selling and highest-earning entertainment product of all time. It’s nothing short of a miracle; fans knew this game had potential, and at the end of the day, it proved its worth. Fans are still playing the game to this day.

Now that Avatar: The Way of Water is out, it remains to be seen if GTA VI will surpass it. The movie netted around $2 billion earlier this year, cementing James Cameron as one of the most popular directors of all time.

But how does the Red Dead Redemption series hold up against these numbers?

How does Red Dead Redemption compare to GTA?

The first game in the semi-rebooted Red Dead Redemption series was not as successful as GTA IV. Red Dead Redemption had sold close to 21 million copies by 2021. GTA IV, on the other hand, earned a revenue of $500 million in its launch week.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was indeed a very successful game. Fans adored it, and critics loved it too. But it only managed to earn $725 million during its opening weekend. Of course, those were not GTA V numbers. That said, Red Dead Redemption 2 was a success in its own right.

This goes to show a few things. Avatar movies release a couple of years ahead of GTA games, and GTA games break the record set by them. This is followed by an RDR release. The pattern says that GTA VI will be launching very soon and it will once again steal Avatar’s thunder by destroying the record set by Avatar: The Way of Water.

Finally, what will ultimately happen is in the hands of the players and fans of these series. But as fans of both these games, it would be good news regardless just to hear their launch dates announced.
