Recently, God of War: Ragnarok became the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation game ever. That success was not enough, it appears some very old games have come to the rescue. This has effectively achieved a very special goal.

Why has the God of War franchise become PlayStation’s most profitable brand?

Indeed, everyone loved those heartfelt stories where people talk to each other about how they feel and learn each other’s importance by the end of the story. This is exactly why The Last of Us HBO series was such a monumental success.

Fans everywhere loved the characters and their dynamics, and they loved how it treated those characters realistically. But many people play video games for fun; hence, they prefer games that offer unmatched gameplay.

And this is why people used to prefer the older God of War titles, they had more focus on brutal gameplay rather than telling a heartfelt tale. They had a story, of course, but it was just a device to give players more reasons to kill more gods.

And that is why, even though The Last of Us’s masterful storytelling remains the best there is, the God of War series is the most profitable brand for PlayStation. The fact that God of War 3 Remastered, a game that launched on PlayStation 4 years ago, proves this point. That game has now crossed 4 million in sales, and the series keeps on climbing this ladder of success.

Besides all these games, Sony and Amazon are in the process of developing a series based on the God of War games. The production was recently fast-tracked after they saw how popular The Last of Us became after the launch of that series.

And this success might even bring us the new game installment in this series sooner than anyone had ever imagined.
