While the Covid-19 pandemic has been harsh on most industries, it has provided a silver lining for the gaming industry. Manufacturers like Xbox and PlayStation have seen a drastic rise in the demand for their consoles because of the movement restrictions in place due to the pandemic.
Gaming Analyst Tom Piscatella took to Twitter to reveal an interesting stat about the gaming industry. According to Piscatella “June 2021 consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories grew 5% when compared to a year ago, totaling $4.9 billion.” Furthermore, consumer spending during the first half of 2021 saw a 15% increase as compared to the same period in 2020.
Xbox has also made big strides during the month of June. According to NPD, dollar sales of Xbox consoles were at an all-time high for the Xbox platform, surpassing the previous high set in June 2011. Despite this impressive achievement from Xbox, Nintendo continues to dominate unit sales. As per reports, the Nintendo Switch sold the most console units during the month. This is frightening news for its newly released competitor, the Steam Deck.

Xbox continues to lag behind PlayStation in units sold
Unlike Microsoft, Sony has been consistent with its console sales since the release of the PS5. The NPD Group report revealed that the PlayStation 5 remains the fastest unit selling home console hardware platform in US history. In addition to this, the new and improved DualSense 5 controllers dominated sales when it comes to console accessories.
In terms of games, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart took the top spot for the best-selling game this month. The unique space adventure achieved the highest launch month dollar sales of any title in franchise history.
