Xbox made an announcement earlier this year, revealing its status as the pioneer console to introduce specialized tools for measuring energy usage and carbon emissions, specifically crafted for game developers. Known as the Sustainability Toolkit, this innovative resource not only furnishes game creators with data, case studies, and actionable guidelines but also equips them with the means to make noteworthy energy conservation strides.

Also, according to Xbox, these console updates help players keep playing their favorite games at a lower energy bill and at a lower cost to the environment. For this crucial step in the welfare of the environment, Xbox has won the Green Studio of the Year Award at the Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023.

The Gamescom Opening Night Live 2023 concluded with a brief speech from the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer. This is what he had to say on the center stage of Gamescom while receiving the award:

“I’m accepting this award on behalf of an incredible team at Xbox that has worked very hard to put tools in the hands of developers to allow them to see the impact of their code on the energy draw of the consoles. We do this so that we can all play while we continue to make the world a more sustainable place.”

This award was presented by the United Nations’s Playing for the Planet. In finding a winner for the award, the Playing for the Planet Alliance looked for “bold, system-changing, innovative, and creative ways to tackle the climate crisis”, stating that “all nominees this year (Xbox, Ubisoft, Frontier Developments) have done an amazing job.”
