The anticipation regarding Sony’s upcoming acquisition in 2024 is getting higher day by day! Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard for a staggering $69 billion has set off a chain reaction and, naturally, its competitors are all thrilled. During the FTC-Microsoft trials, Sony had claimed the takeover would give the Xbox makers an undue advantage in the industry. However, Microsoft brushed off the allegations and didn’t budge from their standpoint.

One of the key arguments that Microsoft sighted at the court hearing was that Sony already has a long list of exclusive titles. On the other hand, Xbox has few such titles and this acquisition would enable them to compete better. Now, as the acquisition received the green signal, Sony’s future moves have sparked a lot of speculation among the fans.

Now, some industry experts predict that we might be looking at more intensive investments from Sony in 2024 to retain its dominant position in the industry. Sony generates a ton of revenue through their PlayStation consoles apart from their games. These consoles are by far the most sold video game devices in the world. Despite that, Sony is scurrying to get their hands on some of the biggest studios to make sure it doesn’t fall behind its competition.

Only last year it was rumored that Sony was looking to acquire Square Enix as part of its expansion plans. The studio is known for the iconic Final Fantasy series. While Square Enix is probably the biggest name on the list of studios that Sony plans to take control of, several other studios are also highly rumored to become part of Sony’s roster in 2024.

Impulse Gear and EmberLabs are also two other companies that are under Sony’s radar. Impulse Gear is behind the 2017 hit title Farpoint, while EmberLabs are the devs for the 2021 action-adventurer Kena: Bridge of Spirits. Both these titles were published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, making the acquisition rumors have some solid justification.

New PlayStation for 2023?

The Sony PlayStation is arguably the most popular gaming console on the market. Since the first PlayStation was released in 1994, it has amassed a loyal fanbase over three decades. Despite its popularity, the consoles are still not affordable to a larger audience. With that in mind, Sony hinted that a more affordable version may hit the market in late 2023.

While we still wait for an update about a cheaper PS console, the community is blown over by the Limited Edition Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 PlayStation 5. However, while fans loved its looks, they also looked forward to being able to get a cheaper variant that they could hope to buy without much deliberation.
