The 2021 BMW PGA Championship is currently underway at the Wentworth Golf Clun in Surrey. And the event is all set for a captivating finish as Francesco Laporta leads the event with a score of -14. However, prominent players like Lee Westwood finished their final round, as he was one of the early starters on the final day.

He carded a disappointing five over par for the day and finished with a score of even-par over 72-holes. Lee Westwood started his final round with a couple of birdies and looked like was in a great rhythm. However, he registered three bogeys and three double bogeys and had a disappointing finish to the event.

“I just couldn’t focus on the right things,” says Lee Westwood

Meanwhile, Lee Westwood, in the post-round interview, said, “You want to really come to the BMW PGA Championship and focus on winning the BMW PGA. You don’t really want any other things going on in your head, and I battled with that all week. I just couldn’t focus on the right things.”

Westwood is fighting for his place in the European Ryder Cup team. And a strong finish this week would have secured his place at the prestigious event. However, his poor finish had affected his chances of getting on the team.

Moreover, he even admitted that not focusing on one thing and having multiple things going on in his head hurt him a lot. And he said that he couldn’t focus on the right positive aspects. Hence, Westwood needs to rely on Padraig Harrington’s captain’s pick.

Westwood hits out at Ryder Cup Team selection

“Three or four years ago golf was meaning to much to me, so I employed a psychologist who I’ve done a lot of work with, and I’ve kind of made it my thing to not make golf important to me anymore,” said Westwood.

“I can walk off an 18th green now and I try and forget what’s going on. Once the tournament is over for me, it’s over and you start thinking about what I need to work on in my game and where I may be playing next.”

“Right now, I don’t know where I will be playing next and that’s the volatility of this week. There’s more important things in life for me than golf,” he added.

Lee Westwood carded a final round 77 with five birdies, three bogeys, and three double bogeys and was completely out of sync with his game. And the Englishman’s place in the Ryder Cup spot through automatic qualification is over, and now he relies on the three captain’s pick, which will be announced later in the evening today.

So given the experience that Lee Westwood has, he is one of the top contenders to get a place in the three captain’s pick. And Padraig Harrington will certainly think about this before announcing his three picks.
