As the dust settles on the contentious championship race, F1 now has time to reflect on what has been a stunning season in its history. However, upon this reflection, the many errors in the sport also come to mind. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff’s wife, Susie, shared her thoughts on the season, claiming to have fallen out of love with the sport.
Susie Wolff began a strong Instagram post with her disappointment with the race in Abu Dhabi. “I believed both teams and both drivers deserved to win. It was going to be a spectacle, a historic race that we all hoped would end without controversy. That wasn’t to be.”

The result left her with a “sick feeling”. However, it was not because of Mercedes’ opponents, but rather the rules of the sport. “The way in which Lewis was robbed has left me in utter disbelief.”
The last lap shenanigans by the FIA and race director is what needs to be changed, according to Wolff. ” Rules are rules, they can’t be changed on a whim by one individual at the end of a race.”
She ended her post with a firm statement. “I hope by March of next year there is a governing body with sporting integrity and fairness at its core so I can fall back in love with F1.”

In her post, Wolff also left some words of encouragement to her friend, Lewis Hamilton. “you have shown incredible integrity and dignity in the face of injustice. You are the greatest there has ever been. The outcome of the last laps on Sunday? Those who know, they know, even those who can’t quite bring themselves to admit it.”
Mercedes has been incredibly silent after the race on Sunday. With their social media accounts silent and no statements made, Susie Wolff’s opinion was the correct way to end the loud silence.

Lewis Hamilton has said nothing either, even regarding his new title in knighthood. Additionally, Mercedes’ refusal to take part in the official FIA photoshoot as champions, only makes one thing loud and clear- the team isn’t happy.
There have been many moments in the season where the rulings made in the steward’s room have impacted either team; however, when it mattered the most- in a championship defining race and lap, the incompetence weighed heavily on Mercedes.

Now, with Wolff being the voice of reason and change on behalf of the team, maybe the FIA will find a way to improve and make up for the errors of the 2021 season. With a fresh start awaiting the sport in the coming season, the rules could use a fixer-upper as well.
