Christian Horner Airs Netflix’s Dirty Laundry in Public to Expose the Ugly Side of Drive to Survive

Formula 1 is a niche sport, but before the Liberty Media takeover, it was a sinking ship, with not many people developing an interest in such a technical sport. Fast forward to 2023, when the F1 circus will visit the land of Uncle Sam thrice because of the exponential popularity Drive to Survive has accorded to the sport. But this has come at a cost of many sacrifices. Red Bull TP Christian Horner lets us in on how things are twisted by Netflix.

Talking about dramatic docuseries and their accuracy, Horner said that we should remember that “it is a TV show”. Netflix captures hours of content spread over the entire season, which is then edited to bring it to a ten-episode length worth of content. And the teams, drivers are fitted with a microphone. However, with hundreds of cameras in your face, it gets difficult to identify which is the real one trying to capture spice.

In an interview with the Financial Times, Horner said, “What you got to remember is that it is a TV show. They capture hours and hours of content and the problem is they put a microphone on you at the beginning of the day um and uh and the cameras are embedded with the team. There are so many cameras around Formula One you don’t know which one is Netflix or which one is somebody else.”

He added, “You forget that they’re there and then you get to the end of the season at the end of the year and they tend to send you through the clips um of just you of just your team and they don’t show you how in context to um uh to the others and then you think really did I really say that um did I really call someone I see you next Tuesday.”

While the British TP has blamed DTs for playing to the entity’s confusion, he has also added humor to the situation.

While Christian Horner gives full credit to the DTS initiative for boosting the popularity of the sport, he has also humorously let the world in on a technique one should employ to save being captured by the cameras.

He added, “If you spent your entire time walking around with a tear piece of technical pit exactly yeah, walk around with a front wing. They’re making a TV show so you know they’ll create a narrative you know they’ll portray you sometimes you’re the Baddie sometimes you’re the hero um sometimes you’re both in one series uh in one episode.”
