Fernando Alonso Wants Fans to Answer the All-Important Question Amidst F1 Debate

Alpine driver Fernando Alonso left it upon the fans to choose if sprint races should remain a part of F1. Sprint races are the latest addition to an F1 race weekend, held thrice in 2021 at Silverstone, Italy, and Brazil. These races on Saturday strike a distance of nearly 100 km to decide the grid position for the Grand Prix. After fairly successful results of this new format, F1 has planned to roll sprint races out to six venues in the 2022 calendar.
As per the F1 website, “It is designed to provide a short and fast-paced racing spectacle–similar to a Twenty20 cricket match–with drivers racing flat-out from start to finish without the need to pit.”
Former world champion Fernando Alonso recently pitched in with his opinion on the much-debated subject.

He believes that this addition is a good one, with a scope of improvement in some areas. But the Alpine driver rests the onus on F1 enthusiasts to decide if this fresh addition should stay in the sport.

Fernando Alonso wants F1 fans to decide the future of Sprint races

In a recent interview reported by Motorsport.com, Alonso discussed the future of Sprint races among other things. “It changes the routine to a weekend, so I’m happy with it. There is only a training session before the cars go to parc ferme. This causes more stress. Then there are two more races on the program,” said the Spaniard.
“It works well for us. That’s why I’m happy with the sprint races. The format was developed for them (fans). It is intended to improve the show and attract new fans,” Alonso continues.

“It is important to ask them various questions: ‘What do you think of the weekend? What was good and what was not good?’ What we change, they have to decide. For teams, it doesn’t matter much. Preparation for the weekend is a bit different, but in the end, it’s the same for everyone. The fans have to be put first,” concluded the 40-year-old.

In the coming times, this debate will change many faces as the insiders have raised their concern, primarily McLaren CEO Brown.
