One of the biggest dramas in the 2023 Formula 1 season revolved around Charles Leclerc’s hefty contract extension at Ferrari. Amidst the rumors of the Monegasque’s staggering $215 million contract extension and an apparent bias within the team, Carlos Sainz was allegedly exploring an alternative route. Reports suggested that dissatisfied with the uncertainty surrounding his future at Ferrari, Sainz had inked a pre-contract with Audi, echoing his father’s historic connection with the German automaker. However, as the Spaniard seeks a path away from Ferrari, the spotlight turns to Theo Pourchaire, the newly crowned Formula 2 champion.

Theo Pourchaire overcame a challenging weekend in Abu Dhabi to secure the title, catching the attention of motorsport pundit Peter Windsor. Owing to his impressive performance throughout the weekends, Windsor believes Pourchaire could very well make the step up to F1 with an Audi Formula 1 seat in the anticipated 2026 season.

Formula 2 witnessed a thrilling conclusion in Abu Dhabi. Theo Pourchaire, a promising young talent of the Sauber Academy, emerged as the Formula 2 champion after a nail-biting weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit. Surviving a challenging weekend, the Frenchman secured the title by a mere 11 points, fending off the fierce competition from Frederik Vesti. Despite setbacks in qualifying, the Sprint race, and the Feature event, Pourchaire showcased resilience and skill, ultimately clinching the championship.

As the motorsport community celebrated Pourchaire’s triumph, Peter Windsor took note. In his analysis of the season finale, Windsor highlighted Pourchaire’s potential transition to Formula 1, particularly with Audi. Sauber’s partnership with Alfa Romeo ended this season. And after the team’s announcement last year that it would become the Audi works team in 2026, that could be Pourchaire’s ticket to F1. Windsor commended Pourchaire’s performance, stating, Congratulations to Theo Pourchaire for his win in the F2 Championship.

“Fred Vesti finished third, so he was there on the podium as well. [A] very good drive from where he was on the grid. But congratulations to Theo, he is one of the young Academy drivers at Sauber, and guess what that means—Audi. By the time he’s ready for Formula 1 in terms of there being a place in that seat, we may well see Pourchaire in an Audi Formula 1 car. Hopefully, even before that, because he’s really quick and driven beautifully for most of the season,” Windsor noted.

From the looks of it, Pourchaire could very well be a strong contender against Carlos Sainz for an Audi seat in 2026. Given the rumors about his pre-contract, what really caused Carlos Sainz to look for possible racing options beyond the Maranello-based outfit?

The Hungarian GP was the start of the rift between Carlos Sainz and Ferrari

The cracks in the relationship between Sainz and the Italian team became apparent during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Despite a strong start that saw Sainz surge to P6 from his P11 starting position, the race ended in disappointment as he finished in P8. Sainz, vocal about his frustrations, pointed fingers at Ferrari’s strategic decisions.

The pivotal moment came when the team opted for a position swap to compensate for Charles Leclerc’s poor pitstop, a move that the Spaniard believed derailed his race. In the aftermath of the Hungarian GP, Sainz voiced his discontent, stating, “There’s not much to say. Charles had a complicated stop, and then it’s clear that the team has decided to change the positions of the cars, maybe to compensate or I don’t know. A shame.
