When Sebastian Vettel decided to leave Ferrari at the end of 2020 and joined the Aston Martin, erstwhile Racing Point, Perez was left without a seat in F1 even after an impressive season. He entered the 2020 Abu Dhabi GP thinking it would be his last one, but a surprise was waiting for him. Red Bull, who did not decide their driver lineup until the last moment, finally called Perez to fill in for Albon in 2021.

The Mexican star clinched his only victory last season in the Azerbaijan GP, alongside 5 other podium finishes. Now, Red Bull has retained him for the 2022 season as Max Verstappen’s teammate. Though the Mexican driver remains one of the best on the grid, many believe he is serving as a wingman to the Dutch teammate. However, Max Verstappen categorically refuted this claim.
