German driver Sophia Florsch has recently spoken out against motor racing authorities. She also accused F1 in this conversation and said that no real action is taking place to promote diversity. Sophia crashed into the photographer’s bunker during the Macau Grand Prix in 2018. She also pointed out how her crash has become the focal point of her vast career.

Macau Grand Prix is surely not a splendid memory for Sophia. She was merely 17 years old when she took part in the Formula 3 World cup. After a high-speed contact with a fellow driver, her car catapulted off a bend and was launched into the cabin at a speed of 171 mph. This crash landed her with a broken spine, which was followed by an 11-hour surgery. A marshal and two photographers were also hospitalized alongside her.

Florsch has since worked hard to raise awareness about the need for diversity, equality, and inclusion of women in motor racing. She was quick to point out, how her crash made no indifference for female drivers. Despite all the attention that she received, there was no potential change in the state of affairs.

She said, “Although our team is full of female drivers but there is no real chance,”

“All of this is really just cheap commitments. There is little real support for the level of sport diversity in an even setting.”

“Motorsports moves fast. After the accident, women drew attention, but it was not a step forward in terms of sports.” She further added.

“Name dropping is boring,” claims Sophia Florsch

Sophia has since spoken out against the potential prejudices that a female driver has to face. In 2020, she criticized the German media for promoting Mick Schumacher and David Schumacher because of their respective father’s popularity. She felt the media was ignoring many other talented drivers.

Despite the circumstances, Sophia wishes to “return to the single-seater series”. She still follows her dream of racing in Formula 1 one day. She recently stated that, “I’m 21 years old and I think I can and should pursue this goal.”

“If you have a big budget, you can go fast, if you have a small budget, you may have to take a detour. But I am fighting in my own way and I firmly believe that I have a future.”

“At some point, the investment will pay off.” She further added.
