Mercedes F1 Reportedly Making a Big Change to Their Car Ahead of Portuguese GP Free Practice

Mercedes will have to let DAS go for the 2021 season. Since its arrival earlier this year, many teams were concerned about the legality of the steering system. However, Technical Chief James Allison was certain that the FIA would not have an issue with the same. Yet the FIA finally ruled out the modification for the upcoming season.
In the context, Mercedes would hit the Portimao circuit without the DAS system in their steering cavity for free practice. The team understands that the FIA’s decision to rule out the advantage of DAS was a step towards achieving equality.

Mercedes should not be worried about losing out on DAS
Podium finishes should not be a problem for the Brackley-based outfit, considering how they were just as good without the DAS. The system did nothing more than give Mercedes an extra edge over the teams.

Although the change may trouble the Silver Arrows’ fans, it does not bother the defending champion. The Mercedes No. 44 has a lot of faith in his team and crew. He is certain that the team will develop something or the other to fill up the void.

“A lot of the directions that Valtteri [Bottas] and I have been pushing the car over these past couple of years have come to fruition, and then there’s I’d say things that the team have dreamed up – some incredible designs such as DAS,” remarked the champion.
The Briton is aware of the capability of his team. He knows that someone in the tech department will come up with yet another groundbreaking system to give the team that extra edge over others.
