All eyes will be on Tuscaloosa this Saturday as the Georgia Bulldogs prepare to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide at 7:30 p.m. ET. But with Tropical Storm Isaias threatening to disrupt the region, the highly anticipated showdown could face a weather-related complication.
The National Weather Service warned in an update on Wednesday that the storm could intensify into a “strong hurricane” before reaching the Gulf Coast on Friday. And local meteorologists have also forecast landfall that evening, raising questions about its potential impact on the weekend’s plans.
Interestingly, the approaching storm has not yet changed President Donald Trump’s reported plans to attend the game. White House officials told Front Office Sports on Wednesday that the president intends to be in attendance. However, is that really the case? Here’s what we found!
Our Verdict: Partially True
Despite White House officials confirming Trump’s expected attendance, the president himself has cast doubt on whether he will make it to the game. On Wednesday afternoon, the POTUS said his visit was still up in the air, explaining that the storm’s trajectory would ultimately determine his decision.
“I hadn’t heard about a hurricane,” Trump said. “A hurricane is going in the vicinity of Alabama? That’s not good. Certainly, I’m going to let the hurricane determine; I want people to be safe.”
If Trump does attend and the storm does not disrupt the game, it would mark his second SEC football appearance in recent weeks. He previously watched Texas secure a 20-17 victory over Tennessee in Knoxville on September 26.
Meanwhile, the extent to which the storm could affect Saturday’s game remains uncertain. Forecasts call for winds approaching 45 miles per hour, along with several inches of rain across the state. An SEC spokesperson told FOS that the conference is closely monitoring the situation.
The conference is also in contact with schools whose games could be affected by the weather. For now, Alabama Athletics has no plans to relocate or postpone Saturday’s matchup, according to a statement released Tuesday. Alabama coach Kalen DeBoer and Georgia coach Kirby Smart have also addressed the potential weather challenges.
“It depends on the level of weather you get,” DeBoer said. “It hasn’t affected us much other than doing some wet ball drills and getting a wet ball involved in some of our team reps. I’m not involved too much, just updated on where things stand […] but I haven’t heard anything recently.”
“It’s uncertainty. [It’s] beyond my control,” Smart said. “We, as coaches, game plan for multiple situations, weather conditions, when they’re there. We had that same prep last week with the threat of those things. … You can’t simulate them, so you’re much better off to educate, learn from the past of other people who have played in them, and prepare your team to play and not make it about that.”
