The Swiss number one, Roger Federer kept his quest for an unprecedented eighth title at Halle on track, after he overpowered Latvian Ernests Gulbis 6-3, 7-5 on Wednesday. He will now meet Germany’s Florian Mayer in the quarter final who defeated American Steve Johnson 6-3, 7-6(4).
The 17-time Grand Slam champion had little problems against Gulbis, after being pushed into three sets in his previous round by Philipp Kohlschreiber .
Federer has reached the finals here of last nine editions and has won 7 of them. He converted one of his two break points to wrap up the first set. He then went 6-5 up in the second and served it out with ease. He closed out the match in style as he improved his record for the season to 30 wins against six defeats just days after losing a Roland Garros quarter-final against eventual champion and compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka.
Federer would like to add another title under his belt this season, in addition to Brisbane, Dubai and Istanbul. A title here would boost his confidence, before he marches out on the Wimbledon center court to hold that glittering trophy for a record eigth-time.
