Feliciano Lopez Claims His Second Title at Queen’s Club Championships

The Spaniard, Feliciano Lopez has been having a thriving week at the Queen’s Club Championships this week. His into the doubles finals at Queen’s alongside the Brit, Andy Murray and he defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets to reach the singles final.

In the finals of the Fever-Tree Championships 2019, the Spaniard defeated the Frenchman Gilles Simon 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-6(2) to claim his seventh title of his career and his fourth title on the grass. He becomes the first wildcard champion at Queen’s since Pete Sampras in 1999. 

The Spaniard doesn’t have any time to relax after his title win since he’ll be shortly playing the doubles final with Murray at Queen’s. It was the 37-year-old, Roger Federer who pulled off his 10th title in Halle just a few hours ago and the 37-year-old, Feliciano Lopez claimed his second title in the west London club. And both of them become the oldest winners on the ATP Tour.

Despite having a busy tennis schedule on Saturday which comprised of three matches, World Number 113, Feliciano Lopez wrapped up the first set 6-2 with a service ace in just 40 minutes.

The 2017 Queen’s champion, Lopez dropped the first two games in the second set, but he was determined to stay in the set and claimed the next eight points out the nine which were played by sliding around the British grass court and leveled the set to 2-2.

The set continued to be nervy with Gilles Simon coming with tricky backhand passes, and the ATP men played a safe game. In the tiebreaker, Feliciano Lopez grabbed an advantage on the opening point and could lead the tiebreaker until Simon equalised the score at 4-4. And then, the Frenchman ranted to seal the set 7-6(4) as the Spaniard committed an unforced error.

Feliciano Lopez had three break chances in the second game of the third set, but Gilles Simon’s backhand pass saved him from going a break down in the decider. The set had similar moments as the previous one. Lopez held a championship point at 6-5 and the particular game was followed by multiple deuces. The set was pushed into the tiebreaker with Simon holding his serve at 6-6. This time, the tiebreaker was won by Feliciano Lopez and allowed Simon to win just two points.
