In a sport like boxing where the competitors put their life on the line while in the ring, the referee holds a lot of responsibility and accountability. A lapse in judgment by the referee could put the fighter at risk of getting severely injured and also put their careers in jeopardy.

Late stoppages could threaten a fighter’s life. However, for a fighter, early stoppages by referees can adversely affect their career trajectory as one loss in boxing could change the direction of their whole career. Recently, a female referee found out about this the hard way after she was called out by fans for a blatantly obvious early stoppage.

Fans call out a female referee for an early stoppage

Online media outlet TheSports Man posted a video in which a female referee officiating an amateur bout in the Commonwealth games called off the fight after just a 3-count. The boxer stood up after that, but the referee did not see him fit to continue and stopped the fight. Even the commentators felt that this was poor officiating from the referee.

Fans were also quick to call her out as one fan stated all the hard work by the boxer was ruined by her, while also calling her an amateur.

It looked like the referee was not fully qualified to officiate a bout of that caliber. This might not fully be her fault, as the commission that appointed her is also to blame. An underqualified referee officiating bouts should not happen at this level and there should be some accountability on both the referee and the commission.
