Atletico Madrid are poised to bring left back Filipe Luis into their side to strengthen the defence, according to reports.

Luis was instrumental in Atletico’s La liga winning campaign of 2013-14, after which he was sold to Chelsea for £15.8 million. But the Brazilian left back made just 15 appearances for the London side last season, as Cesar Azpilicueta was in superb form throughout Chelsea’s title run.

Chelsea is closing in on another left back Abdul Baba Rahman from German side Augsburg, as the speedy youngster had an excellent last season. Chelsea are facing stiff competition from Italian side AS Roma for the 20-year-old’s signature, but are confident that they will pursue the Ghana international.

Luis, who found it hard to adjust to the Premier League, finds himself in a bad position, and wants a move out of Chelsea, after playing just a single season for them. And according to reports, Atletico have shown interest in signing Luis back.

Atletico found it hard to replace Luis last season, with Guilherme Siqueira, the only left back in the team. As a result, Atletico are looking for someone in that position and Filipe Luis might be their best option.

The reports of a move back to the Spanish capital were fuelled when Atletico Madrid’s winger Koke stated that the 29-year-old could return to his previous team.

Koke told Marca, “Filipe Luis decided to leave and now he has the chance to return. If he arrives, there will be more competition, and that’s good. We’ll be a better team and fight for more things. He is no traitor. As long as he plays, and plays well, there won’t be any problem.”

Atletico Manager Diego Simeone is keen to bring back Luis into the squad, after the Rojiblancos failed to defend their league title last season.
