The competition is getting tougher, and things have started to get serious at the Tokyo Olympics. In a match that went for almost 100 minutes, Spain’s Garbine Muguruza took on Elena Rybakina. Unfortunately, the match ended in an upset, as the Spaniard lost and ended her hopes of acquiring a medal, losing 5-7, 1-6.

Set 1: Elena Rybakina strikes late 

As the match began, Muguruza and Elena Rybakina played with great efficiency. They were leaving no room for error and things were consistent till the ending stages.

The first break of the match came in the 12th game of the set when the Kazakhstani player broke the Spaniard and claimed the set 7-5 in 47 minutes. During the set, Elena registered more winners than Garbine.

Set 2: Garbine Muguruza is no match for the Kazakhstani player

In the following set, while Elena was riding on the momentum, Garbine was struggling to find her rhythm. Rybakina registered more winners and fewer unforced errors than Muguruza. 

As the set progressed, the match was slipping away from the Spaniard’s grip. In the fourth game, Garbine was broken for the first time in the second set.

To make matters worse, Elena broke the Spaniard for the second time in the set. Eventually, she served it out and won 6-1, clearly displaying her dominance during the set.

With that win, Elena Rybakina will face Swiss tennis player Belinda Bencic in the semifinal. Both players have a great chance of acquiring a medal. We wish them the very best for the upcoming matches.
