After eight seasons with the Lakers and a 2020 NBA championship title, LeBron James is ready for a fresh start. He is now a free agent looking for his next team after facing three first-round playoff exits in 2021, 2024, and 2025 with the Lakers. Despite not winning a championship, James made $52.63 million this season alone, taking his total NBA career earnings to more than $583 million. He is also the first active NBA player to become a billionaire. But his next contract is not about money.

Instead, he wants to choose the team that gives him the best chance to finish his career the way he wants, possibly by winning another NBA championship. Even though many teams would like to sign him, only a few can actually afford him because of salary caps, apron rules, and more. But before we get to that, why did King James decide to part ways with the Lakers when his son is part of the team?
Why did LeBron James leave the Lakers?
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, LeBron James was willing to accept a pay cut if the Lakers had explained how they would use the extra money to improve the team. However, the Lakers never shared their plan with him, so he never met with the team to discuss a new contract. Even then, his agent, Rich Paul, was “80%” sure James would stay. But then Shelburne reported that Paul believed two things changed LeBron’s mind.
First, LeBron recently met with his former Cleveland Cavaliers teammates to celebrate their 2016 NBA championship, which left an impact. Second was Doncic’s rise as the Lakers’ No. 1 star player. During the 2025-26 season, LeBron often played behind Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves until their injury.
So when free agency began, the Lakers contacted James’s agent, Rich Paul, but Paul said LeBron had already decided to leave. Around the same time, the Lakers gave Austin Reaves a new four-year contract worth $185 million. Some analysts believe James read the writing on the wall and took the call.
Which teams are interested in signing LeBron James?
Six NBA teams still believe they have a chance to sign LeBron James as a free agent. NBA insider Marc Stein said the Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, Golden State Warriors, and Cleveland Cavaliers are all hoping to add him to their team.

More than $65 million has been spent by people on the prediction market platform Kalshi about which team LeBron James will join next.
- As of July 6, the Cleveland Cavaliers were the favorites, with the market giving them a 57% chance of signing LeBron.
- The Golden State Warriors had a 16% chance, while the Miami Heat improved to 16%.
- The Philadelphia 76ers had a 6% chance, the Minnesota Timberwolves had 5%, the Denver Nuggets had 3%, and the New York Knicks had 2%.
Even though these teams are interested, LeBron has not spoken with any of them directly. The teams wanted to know if he would meet with them or listen to their plans before making a decision. However, NBA insider Chris Haynes said LeBron will not hold any meetings. Instead, he will decide on his next team based on the information and advice he receives from his agent, Rich Paul.

Rich Paul has made it clear that he does not expect LeBron James to choose his next team “anytime soon.” For now, no one knows which team LeBron will choose. And it’s not going to be easy because every team has their own problems.
Why it’s not easy for teams to sign LeBron James
The NBA has increased the amount of money teams can spend on player salaries for the 2026-27 season.
- This spending limit, called the salary cap, is now $164.961 million, which is 6.5% higher than last season.
- Each team can now spend about $10.42 million more on player salaries than before.
- The minimum amount that teams must spend on players has also increased to $148.465 million.
The first apron is now $209.015 million, while the second apron is $221.686 million. If a team spends more than these amounts, it faces strict rules that make it harder to sign new players and complete trades. Given these restrictions, it will be harder for any team to get LeBron James on the team.
You might be tempted to think LeBron James will return to the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he won the 2016 NBA championship. But that also means he will have to take a massive pay cut. How much?
“That would require LeBron to play for three million bucks,” ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said. “And I don’t want to spend his money; if he wants to play for three million, he can do it. But until I hear from (agent) Rich Paul that LeBron is ready to play for three million, I’m not going to believe it.”
With the Cavaliers’ current payroll, they can only offer LeBron a minimum-salary contract worth about $4 million unless they make major roster changes. And that’s way less than what James earned with the Lakers. Then there is the apron rule with strict punishments.
- First apron: If a team spends more than the first apron limit, it becomes harder to make trades, sign free agents, and improve the team.
- Second apron: If a team spends more than the second apron, the team:
* Cannot use a special exception to sign certain free agents.
* Cannot combine the salaries of several players in many trades.
* Cannot include cash in trades with other teams.
* Cannot use some special trade rules that help complete deals.
* Faces limits on trading future first-round draft picks, making it harder to build the team for the future.
The Denver Nuggets, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Orlando Magic have already spent enough money on player salaries to go above the first apron. Only a few teams still have enough financial flexibility to sign new players.
According to Spotrac, the Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, and Chicago Bulls each have at least $30 million available to spend on free agents. But the real question is, are the Nets and Bulls interested? Not really. That leaves us with a few other NBA giants.
Contenders versus rebuilding teams
At this stage of his career, LeBron does not have the luxury of time. So joining a rebuilding team would not make much sense because those teams are focused on developing young players and may need several years before they can compete for a championship. It is expected that James will choose a team that already has a strong chance of winning.
Teams like the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Minnesota Timberwolves can fit the bill. However, the paycheck remains a roadblock for both the Warriors and the Timberwolves.
He has won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award four times, plus he is also the NBA’s all-time leading scorer. On top of it, he has now completed his 23rd NBA season, the most by any player in league history. And with his performance, LeBron James also generates revenue off the court. From ticket sales to TV ratings to all the sponsorships to jersey sales, media attention and his presence increase the franchise value and bring revenue. So, James can argue that he deserves way more than what he was getting with the Lakers.
But the teams might never be able to give that kind of money to him because of the apron rules. Now, aging players do accept pay cuts, and James was ready to as well, but the team needs to justify what they will do with that money, something that the Lakers failed to do. So, as his agent said, James is unlikely to make any decision anytime soon.
