For the first time in 13 years, Rockstar Games is releasing a new mainline Grand Theft Auto game. Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Its release comes during the NFL and NBA seasons.

Houston Rockets center Steven Adams has already joked about the game’s possible impact on sports. During the Rockets’ media day on September 22, he predicted that athletes across the NBA, NFL, and other leagues might see a temporary dip in performance as players get caught up in the game.
“Just for the month of November, performance is gonna go down,” Adams said.
He expected things to return to normal by December. His comments were a joke, and there is no evidence that a video game release will affect athletes’ performance.
The bigger question is whether the game could pull viewers away from live sports. If even a few younger fans spend more time gaming, sports networks and advertisers could feel the impact.
Why GTA VI is different
Few video game releases have created this much excitement. GTA V launched in September 2013, and fans have waited more than a decade for its successor. Meanwhile, younger players have grown up watching the franchise through gaming videos, livestreams, and social media.
That means GTA VI could attract several generations of players, not just longtime fans.
- The long wait: GTA VI was first teased in February 2022. Its release date was delayed twice, on May 2, 2025, and November 6, 2025.
- A new generation of players: Someone who was 18 when GTA V launched is now about 31. Today’s 18-to-34-year-olds were between 5 and 21 at the time.
- A massive franchise: Take-Two Interactive says the Grand Theft Auto series has sold more than 470 million copies worldwide.
- A long gaming experience: Estimates suggest the main story in GTA VI could take about 45 to 50 hours to complete, compared with roughly 32 hours for GTA V.
- The launch window: Take-Two says digital preloads can begin November 12. Physical copies containing a download code are also scheduled to be available by November 19.
The NFL also attracts fans across age groups, but gaming offers a different kind of competition. Watching sports is mostly a viewing experience, while video games require players to take part. For some fans, playing GTA VI could replace time they would otherwise spend watching a game.
The key question is whether live sports can hold younger viewers’ attention when one of gaming’s biggest franchises returns.
From GTA V to GTA VI: The journey the franchise has made
The success of GTA V has helped build expectations for its successor. Take-Two’s May 2026 report put GTA V’s lifetime sales at nearly 230 million copies. The game was still selling about 5 million copies per quarter.
Reports also say it sold over 11 million copies and generated $800 million in its first 24 hours. Its lifetime revenue is estimated at nearly $10 billion, although Take-Two does not report the game’s revenue separately, so estimates vary.
- Pricing: The Standard Edition of GTA VI costs $79.99, while the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99.
- Preorder offer: Preorders opened June 25. Purchases made before November 20 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, while digital preorders include one free month of GTA+.
- Available platforms: The game will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version has not been announced.

The success of GTA V does not guarantee that the new game will perform just as well. However, it shows the franchise’s ability to attract buyers and generate revenue.
There is also a major difference between the video game business and professional sports. A blockbuster game can generate a large share of its sales around launch. Sports leagues and broadcasters depend on regular games, long-term media deals, advertising, and subscriptions throughout the season.
A $2 billion game vs. a $2.1 billion NFL stadium
The scale of the investment behind GTA VI is easier to understand when compared with a major sports project.
The Buffalo Bills confirmed that their new Highmark Stadium cost just over $2.1 billion. The reported budget for GTA VI is around $2 billion, although Rockstar Games and Take-Two have not confirmed that figure. It remains an estimate based on media reports and industry analysis.
- The stadium: Highmark Stadium holds 60,108 fans, which works out to about $35,000 per seat. The Bills held the stadium’s ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 23, 2026. The first regular-season game was played against the Detroit Lions on September 17.
- The workforce: The stadium project required more than 5 million labor hours and involved almost 6,000 workers. Fans also contributed $263 million through personal seat license purchases.
- Compared with GTA V: Reports put the cost of GTA V, including marketing, at about $265 million. If GTA VI costs $2 billion, that would be roughly seven to eight times as much.
- How many copies would it take? At a list price of $79.99, selling about 26 million copies would generate $2.1 billion in gross sales before platform and retailer fees. This is a simple comparison, not a profit estimate.
Although the two projects require similar levels of investment, they make money in different ways.
A stadium earns revenue from tickets, luxury suites, concessions, sponsorships, and other events. A video game earns money from sales, digital purchases, and continued player engagement.
Both businesses are competing for people’s time and money. The comparison shows how large entertainment projects have become, even when they operate in very different markets.
Young consumers matter to sports broadcasters
Sports broadcasters are not worried about every gamer. Their main concern is the 18-to-34 age group, which is important to advertisers and could be drawn to a major video game release.
That audience is especially important to streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, which are trying to attract younger viewers.
- Prime Video’s NBA audience: Prime’s NBA broadcasts had a median viewer age of 46.9, compared with 56.0 for traditional TV. Viewership also increased 11% among adults ages 18 to 34 and 20% among adults ages 18 to 49.
- Thursday Night Football: Through five games in 2026, Thursday Night Football averaged 17.29 million viewers. Its median viewer age was 48.6, compared with 54.8 for NFL broadcasts on traditional TV. It also drew 24% more viewers ages 18 to 34 than traditional networks.
- Younger NFL viewers: According to the source analysis, adults ages 18 to 34 accounted for 20% of Prime Video’s NFL audience impressions, compared with about 15% for traditional broadcast partners. Amazon Ads data from the 2024 season showed a similar gap: 20% for Thursday Night Football and 14% for traditional NFL broadcasts.
These figures show why younger viewers matter to streaming services and advertisers. If some of those fans spend more time playing GTA VI, live sports viewership or engagement with highlights and other content could fall temporarily.
However, the numbers do not prove that the game will hurt sports audiences. They only show why broadcasters may pay close attention to the release.
The November test: GTA VI vs. the NFL vs. the NBA
The November 19 release date puts GTA VI directly alongside the NFL and NBA seasons. The game launches on a Thursday, when Prime Video is scheduled to stream the Indianapolis Colts against the Houston Texans.
That makes November a useful time to watch for changes in sports viewing, even if Adams’ prediction about athletes’ performance is unlikely to be the main issue.
There are three possible outcomes:
- A temporary drop: Live sports viewership, streaming activity, or engagement with highlights and pregame coverage falls during the launch period.
- A shift in viewing habits: Fans spend more time gaming but continue watching about the same amount of sports over the longer term.
- No measurable impact: The game dominates online conversations, but sports audiences remain steady.
The NFL has a strong advantage during Thanksgiving week. Its three Thanksgiving games in 2025 averaged 44.7 million viewers, the highest average on record. The Chiefs-Cowboys game drew 57.2 million viewers, making it the most-watched regular-season game in NFL history.
The 2026 Thanksgiving schedule follows a similar pattern, one week after the game launches:
- Bears vs. Lions at 1 p.m. ET on November 26.
- Eagles vs. Cowboys at 4:30 p.m. ET.
- Chiefs vs. Bills at 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, played at the new Highmark Stadium.
The NFL also added a Thanksgiving Eve matchup between the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams on Black Friday on Netflix. Meanwhile, the Denver Broncos will face the Pittsburgh Steelers on Prime Video.
These games could help the NFL maintain strong viewership after the launch. However, streaming audiences may be more vulnerable to competition because their viewing habits differ from those of traditional TV audiences.
Prime Video averaged about 1 million viewers per NBA game, compared with 1.78 million across all NBA broadcast partners. A smaller audience could be easier to distract, but that does not mean a decline is inevitable.
The real question is whether GTA VI simply takes over the cultural conversation or leads to a measurable drop in live sports viewing.
A much bigger battle is waiting around the corner
The launch of GTA VI is part of a larger competition for people’s attention. Sports leagues and broadcasters now compete with video games, streaming services, social media, and other forms of entertainment.
To keep younger viewers interested, sports networks may need to offer better digital experiences, more highlights, interactive features, and content that fans can enjoy outside live broadcasts.
- A short-term dip does not mean a lasting decline: Even if sports viewing falls briefly in November, that would not prove that fans are losing interest in sports.
- A measurable drop would matter: If viewership falls during the launch window, it could show how quickly a major entertainment release can change younger fans’ habits.
- The long-term question: As entertainment options continue to grow, can live sports remain a regular part of life for the next generation?
November will not answer that question on its own. But the launch of GTA VI will give sports leagues, broadcasters, and advertisers a chance to see how much attention a major video game can draw away from live sports.
