27-year old Frank Sanchez brought up his 15th victory as a professional. He beat Joey Dawejko by points last month. The win saw him break into the top 10 of the WBO rankings and his manager Mike Barao feels ‘The Cuban Flash’ could be in a good place to challenge for one of Anthony Joshua’s titles.

The 30-year old Brit is a unified heavyweight Champion. He currently holds the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO titles. ‘AJ’ must defend his titles against the IBF and WBO mandatory challengers in Kubrat Pulev and Oleksandr Usyk. He opted to face Pulev first. However, the bout is among the many sporting events that have been disrupted due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Frank Sanchez sets sights on the WBO title

Barao doubts ‘AJ’ will be able to fulfill all his commitments. If he is unable to do so he will be stripped of the title.

He told Sky Sports, “just a guess, but I think Usyk ends up winning a vacated WBO heavyweight title within the next 12 months.”

If that occurs it leaves ‘The Cuban Flash’ in a good position to fight for the title as his consistent performances have seen him ascend the rankings quickly. Sanchez also has momentum on his side as a result of his 15-0 record.

“I believe Frank Sanchez versus WBO No 6 Junior Fa or No 7 Michael Hunter would make sense. Once the boxing world gets back on track, we will try and face one of those younger, top 10 type guys in order to solidify a world title opportunity,” says Barao.

It most likely will be Michael Hunter as he is without an opponent. He drew his last bout with Alexander Povetkin last December. Junior Fa is a potential opponent for countryman and 2nd ranked Joseph Parker. However, nothing has been made official yet and he too could end up facing ‘The Cuban Flash.’

Will ‘The Cuban Flash’ continue his winning streak and be granted a title eliminator bout? Can ‘AJ’ fulfill his title defense commitments?
