French Open Day 2: Venus Williams Crashes Out in 1st Round

In the second day at Roland Garros 2015, the biggest shock came late in the day when Venus Williams was knocked out in the very first round by Sloane Stephens of USA. She defeated Venus in straight sets by winning 7-6, 6-1. Venus was seeded 15th in the Women’s Singles draw at the French Open.

Defending Champion Maria Sharapova cruised to the second round in straight sets by winning 6-2, 6-4 against Kaia Kanepi of Estonia. Other seeded players like Victoria Azarenka(27), C.Suarez Navarro(8), Alize Cornet(29), Samantha Stosur(26), A. Kerber(11), Sara Errani(17), E.Svitolina(19), Sabine Lisicki(20) all made it to Round 2 today very comfortably.

But earlier in the day, there was another upset in the Women’ Singles draw came when Agnieszka Radwanska(14) was knocked out in a 3-setter by unseeded Annika Beck 6-2, 3-6, 6-1.

Upsets were not just restricted to the women’s draw but took place in the men’s draw too at Roland Garros today. Adrian Mannarino(30) was defeated by Jurgen Melzer 7-6, 6-3, 7-6. Feliciano Lopez(11) lost to Teymuraz Gabashvili of Russia 3-6, 6-7, 3-6.

Among the Big Four, Andy Murray had it quite easy as he stormed into the second round with a straight set victory of 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 over F. Arguello of Argentina.

Giles Simon(12), Thomas Berdych(4), Gael Monfils(13), Fabio Fognini(28), David Goffin(17), Pablo Cuevas(21), Nick Kyrgios(29), Bernad Tomic (27), Victor Trioki (31), Tommy Robredo(18) and Fernando Verdasco(31), the other seeded players playing the first round today, all went through to the second round.

The local boys Giles Simon and Gael Monfils both won their matches in 4 sets. While Monfils defeated E.Roger-Vasselin 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, 7-5, Simon defeated L.Pouille of France after recovering from an early hiccup 3-6, 6-1, 6-2, 6-4 and notched the 350th win of his career.
