Gael Monfils Encourages Players To Engage in Politics

The Frenchman, Gael Monfils has been successful for so at Coupe Rogers 2019 in Montreal. In one of his press conferences at Montreal Open 2019, Gael Monfils was asked about his opinions regarding the involvement of players and the ATP men taking up initiatives in the political domain of the sport and how significant it is for the athletes to speak up.

He firmly believes that the players must speak up and take interest in the activities beyond the court action. “Yes, they can actually. I think it’s a great question. I mean, I don’t have the knowledge to speak about that because maybe I’m not that good about politics and other stuff. That’s why I’m not really speaking out about that,” Gael Monfils answered.

“When I fight for a cause and I know it, I fight for it. I’m not scared to say something. I think some tennis player, maybe they’re a bit scared, whatever it is the reason,” he continued.

Monfils feels the politics is not his cup of tea and but, encourages others to take the initiative for the welfare of the sport. “I think now more and more they up and up and they see. Definitely, some athletes, they fight for a big cause. They speak it loud. I think it’s great. It’s great for the sport. It’s great for life. For myself, I can’t because I’m not that good,” he added.

After playing three triumphant matches, World Number 20, Monfils will be setting up his quarterfinal showdown against this year’s Wimbledon semifinalist, Roberto Bautista AgutHubert Hurkacz, who eliminated the reigning finalist and World Number five, Stefanos Tsitsipas was bageled by Monfils in the pre-quarterfinals of Rogers Cup 2019.

This year, Gael Monfils won in Rotterdam, Netherlands by defeating Stan Wawrinka in the finals, but since then he has been having an injury-plagued season and withdrew from a few matches this year.
