Is it time for Sony to shift its focus from Single Player narratives? In the last few years, PlayStation has heavily prioritized first party single-player projects. The Last of Us, God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, and Days Gone are some of the biggest names that come to mind when one thinks of their strategy. But now, it seems like the pattern might change going forward, with a huge focus on the fighting games genre.

The ripple effect of the massive Insomniac Games leak is still being felt. Due to an unwanted amount of information going out in the public domain, many new updates have popped up. Interestingly, one of the leaked pieces of news is connected to Sony’s future games. If you’re into fighting games such as Tekken, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat, this one’s for you.

The first presentation slide shows fighting game transactions and related stats to record how such titles compare to other live-service games. According to the slide details, players usually have to wait for 3 months between transactions. In short, the length of average days for fighting games tends to be higher than the rest of the entries.

Further, the second presentation slide shows the distribution of transaction type connected to the first purchase. It includes games like Street Fighter V and Mortal Kombat 1 alongside FPS and other live-service titles such as Destiny 2. Now, what’s crucial to note is the fact that more than 25 percent of the first transactions for fighting games are season passes. Which means Sony can focus on providing season pass-based content. That’s when (and if) it restarts making fighting games with a live-service model.

For the uninitiated, Sony already owns the Evolution Championship Series (EVO). It’s a prestigious competition held on a yearly basis and focuses on all the latest fighting games. Some fan-favorites included in EVO are Tekken, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat.

Hence, one can imagine the possibility of Sony creating its own, first-party PlayStation exclusive to compete with contemporary titles under the fighting games genre. Doing so might attract more new players as well who are in this category. In fact, some fans on the internet have recently shown interest in a new All-Stars Battle Royale game for PlayStation.
