RPG games are becoming more mainstream by the day. It’s as if gamers have started caring for the kind of experience they get instead of blindly following massive franchises. Several new and exciting role-playing games make their way to the market on a regular basis. And most of these games are successful, both critically and financially. It’s as if gaming is in its golden age. And it would be impossible to pick just one if we were to ask you which one is the best.
This is exactly the issue gamers might be facing nowadays. Especially when choosing an RPG to play, as there are so many good role-playing games out there. Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur’s Gate 3, and The Witcher 3 are arguably the best of them. But how do we pick just one?

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Let’s start with the oldest game of three. Witcher 3 launched back in 2015 to massive fanfare. This was the game that actually placed developer CD Projekt Red on the map. When talking about this title, developers explained that the protagonist of this series was on a personal mission. And he is indeed on a personal mission. He goes around looking for his student/adoptive daughter, Siri. She, on the other hand, is on the run from a dark army called the Wild Hunt.

Now the distance between Geralt and Siri is pretty wide. He has to travel between cities; he has to talk to kings, commoners, and barons alike. Now players have the freedom to talk to people, take hunting quests, and, of course, hunt monsters. They can also partake in some very complicated quests where they start by looking for someone’s wife and end the quest by choosing between the lives of a bunch of children and a tree spirit living in a forest.
These choices eventually build up, and they affect the game’s ultimate ending too. So, it is suggested that players make them after a lot of thought, as this game does not pull any punches when it comes to destroying someone emotionally.
After players are done with the main story, there are two expansions too. One of them is Hearts of Stone, and the other is Blood and Wine. One of them is your standard quest taking place in the pre-existing game world. Blood and Wine, on the other hand, adds a whole new area to the game. And it’s very long, giving players access to a whole new story mode and a way to end Geralt’s story on a happy note.
Gameplay-wise, it’s a third-person game with swordplay as its core gameplay mechanic. Players can enhance their character’s abilities using various potions and oils. Players would need to master the combat in this game, so just go in knowing this.
Cyberpunk 2077
This game gained a lot of traction when CD Projekt Red hit gold with The Witcher 3. The first teaser for Cyberpunk was released way before even Witcher 3’s launch. And once the medieval RPG was launched, fans knew CD Project was a developer worth getting behind. Eventually, Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 and got mixed responses. Most criticism was due to the lack of optimization of this game. It ran pretty badly on consoles and even worse on PCs.

The story was good, the setting was incredible, or one dedicated fan might even say, Breathtaking. It was a good-looking game from the very start. Its main setting, Night City, was a city covered by neon lights and populated by interesting characters. The story was pretty simple: players controlled V. They created their own V; they could be a nomad; they could be a person from inside the city; and every choice in this game mattered. From the very start, players’ choices start counting. What kind of character one chooses to be makes a difference in a bunch of quests. V enters the night city to make something of themselves. And there they meet Jackie, their partner in crime. Jackie and V complete a bunch of jobs for a number of clients until they hit a huge roadblock and everything becomes a mess.
This story has so many twists, turns, and endings that would really make you think. Gameplay-wise, it’s a first-person shooter on the surface. But if players choose to, they can use Katanas, knives, stealth, and even complete missions by just talking to people.
In 2023, CD Projekt Red fixed pretty much every issue that this game had through Phantom Liberty, the brand-new DLC. They have even added a bunch of new stuff to it too. So, one can jump into it without thinking twice and have a splendid time. This one takes place in a whole new city and has a story akin to a spy thriller.
It even gives players a chance to alter the ending of their main story. Completely worth getting into.
Baldur’s Gate 3
This one is a CRPG; these are games that are for hardcore gamers. They start with an original character, and then they are given a party that follows them around. Unlike the last two games, this one doesn’t just let players do anything they want; it lets them try everything they want. Will they succeed? That completely depends on two things: players’ stats and their ability to roll a higher number than required.

Yes, besides the typical CRPG tropes, this one adds the dice-throwing mechanic of dungeons and dragons’ games to it. Players play as characters in a weird prison full of pods; each pod carries a prisoner. And a creature is putting some sort of parasite inside all of its prisoners. Players somehow escape this creature along with some pals who later become their party members. Players and their pals journey through the world of Faerun as they look for a way to remove that parasite. That thing would otherwise turn them into the thing that had captured them before.
While it might sound simple, the story only expands from there. Baldur’s Gate 3 is a game set in a beautifully realized, well-designed game. Everyone in this game is willing to talk to the player’s character. And most people have a mission for themselves. So go nuts, do side missions, and complete quests. A player’s choice of statistics would define how NPCs would react to them. Maybe you have good enough speech that no one ever fights with you; you just talk to them and resolve issues. Others allow players to be fearless warriors. Possibilities are numerous, and they might even affect this game’s story, so just know what you do before taking a step.

A number of romantic partners, an insanely well-realized world, gameplay mechanics that would make dungeons and dragons proud, and music that stays with you. This game got a well-deserved win during the Game Awards 2023. And also one of the most successful games on Steam.
So hardcore CRPG fans just need to try Baldur’s Gate 3.
