Stealth games seem to have lost all their steam nowadays. Not many developers are releasing many games in this genre. Yes, gamers see a couple of instances of titles like Aragami and Styx: Master of Shadows dropping in. And in many games like The Last of Us 2 for instance, you have the option of taking a stealth approach. But the genre itself has yet to see a resurgence like retro RPGs and survival horror games.

But this does not mean that gamers are not looking for such games. Every now and then, people can be seen asking if a new stealth game is coming around anytime soon. Well, a Metal Gear Solid 3 remake is coming sometime in the future. Other than that, gamers can give the following five games a try:

  1. Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

It is a very old game, no doubt, but some consider this to be the best game in the Splinter Cell series to this day. Played in the third person, this game features Sam Fisher, an American agent out to stop a probable World War 3. But unlike other heroes, he fights from the shadows.

Stealing files, robbing banks, covertly interrogating enemies, getting on cargo ships, and getting off without ever getting seen; this game was the definition of stealth.

  1. Styx: Master of Shadows

Mixing some fantastical elements into a stealth game might seem like someone is trying to cheat. But this game is nevertheless a challenge. Styx needs to stick to the shadows, but he could make himself invisible too, albeit for a limited time. He can also make the enemy’s footsteps visible to plan his next step accordingly.

This game is just incredible in this way. While Styx has a bunch of other abilities to fool his enemies, his enemies start adapting according to Styx’s actions over time. That’s why having powers is not enough; using them carefully and creatively is important too.

  1. Dishonored

Talking about stealth games with magical powers, this one too comes to mind. Dishonored brought a breath of fresh air to all the Thief fans out there. It has been said that Arcane really wanted to make a spiritual successor to the Thief series and ended up developing this. It’s played in first person as players go around semi-open world areas trying to assassinate their targets.

The twist comes with those powers; they don’t make you invisible. But you can possess a fish for a time, or you can be a rat. These abilities can be used to find alternate ways to reach your target and deal with them as you will.

  1. Hitman

Agent 47 is a straightforward guy. He gets a target, and he goes and takes care of it. In the newly rebooted series of Hitman games, the task of taking care of people is super fun. Players are thrown into a sandbox environment to explore. Here they can do anything: cause accidents, take disguises, collect tools of destruction to use on their targets, or maybe just cause an unexpected accident.

The best part is that it would keep both kinds of players happy. One that does things the straightforward way and the one that gets creative with his games.

  1. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

There’s no way a list of stealth games can be complete without a Metal Gear Solid title. This list has Phantom Pain for a couple of reasons: first, this game is the latest in the series and easier to get; second, it is the last game directed by Hideo Kojima. And what a game it is! Players are free to do as they want to. Explore huge environments, ride horses, steal military vehicles, kidnap soldiers, and brainwash them to work for you—this game has it all.

Gameplay mechanics such as day and night cycles, guards who change shifts, and a base management minigame. They just come together to create an environment that a player can enjoy for hours and hours.

?Stories hit way better when you are part of them!? Which is why I am a gamer first, writer second and a filmmaker as well. Being associated with movies has given me a very different perspective on gaming. Writing about video games has been on my mind for years and being an eSports writer at EssentiallySports gave me that chance.
