Even the names in the game have a very strong significance. Quite the style of Rockstar Games. The fictional place of Leonida modelled after Florida is done so with a vey specific reason. Leonida comes from Juan Ponce de Leon. 

And it so happens, he was a Spanish explorer who first discovered Florida in 1513.

Los Santos, which translates to “The Saints” in Spanish, is a pun on “The Angels,” which is Los Angeles. These hidden details also add value to the overall satirical tone of the Grand Theft Auto universe, something Rockstar has always enjoyed.
