GTA 6 started breaking records before the game even came out. The trailer broke YouTube when it shattered the record for most views in 24 hours by a non-music video, a record which previously belonged to Mrbeast. The decade-long wait has brought about a lot of anticipation around the game, considering that GTA 5 is the current holder of 9 world records.

With GTA 5 being the best-selling video game in 24 hours since 2013, and no game still dethroning it, the general belief is that the position is reserved for GTA 6. While that’s just one record that Rockstar Games already has under its belt for GTA 5, fans have started to wonder what other records will GTA 6 break.

Bestselling Video Game Within 24 Hours (Might Break)

GTA 6 is anticipated to break the current record held by GTA 5 for the bestselling video game within the first 24 hours of release. GTA 5 sold 11.21 million units on its launch day back in 2013. By the time the game will be out in 2025, it will have been around 12 years between the release of the games.

The 12-year gap has led to some massive developments in the gaming industry. Now, taking full advantage of the capabilities of the PS5, GTA 6 is expected to outsell GTA 5 on the first day.

Currently, the second-highest-sold game in 24 hours is Cyberpunk 2077 with 8 million copies sold on its first day followed by the original Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 with 6.5 million copies sold.

Fastest Selling Video Game (Might Break)

The record currently belongs to GTA 5, which made $1bn in just 3 days.

Judging by the anticipation and expectation that GTA 6 will be better than GTA V, GTA 6 might just shatter this record too. And considering it’s one of the most expensive games to be made, the developers will surely hope for this too if they want to get a good return for all their efforts into making GTA 6.

Highest Grossing Entertainment Product (Might Break)

GTA 5 is reported to have made $8.3 billion in revenue out of the sales of the game, making it the highest-grossing entertainment product. Upon release, GTA 5 was sold for $59.99 for the standard edition. GTA 6 is expected to cost approximately $70, taking into consideration the prices of a AAA title on next-gen consoles, making it $10 costlier than its prequel.

If GTA 6 even achieves the success of GTA 5, the $10 difference in price will lead it to take the position of being the Highest Grossing Entertainment Product.

Highest Revenue Generated by a Video Game on Launch Day (Might Break)

With a speculated budget between $1 billion to $2 billion, GTA 6, if it manages to sell 12 million copies on its launch day at the industry standard price of $70, could potentially generate $840 million in revenue within the first 24 hours.

GTA 5 currently holds the title for this, having generated more than $800 million in revenue within the first 24 hours. Cyberpunk is the second most-sold game in 24 hours, having generated over $500 million. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 secured the third position with more than $400 million in revenue within the first 24 hours.

Bestselling Video Game of All Time (Might not break)

It is considered unlikely that GTA 6 will break the record for the bestselling video game of all time, currently held by Minecraft with 300 million copies sold. While Minecraft is an easily accessible game across several platforms, GTA 6 might have some constraints.

Firstly, GTA 6 will be released only on new-gen consoles and PCs. This limits it from being sold on markets like Android, iOS, and even last-gen consoles like the PS4, which Minecraft is capitalizing.

Secondly, the game being for a mature audience limits the number of players that can play the game.

The third driving point is that while GTA 6 is expected to be released for $70, Minecraft has been selling for less than $30 for the last 13 years.

Super Mario Bros, a true heavyweight, claims the title of the top-selling game series with an impressive record of over 800 million copies sold. Following closely are Tetris, Pokemon, Call of Duty and of course, GTA. But all thee are in the 400 range, far behind Mario.

It seems unlikely that it will be able to surpass the Mario franchise. Mario’s timeless appeal, simplicity, and extensive catalog of over 200 games released since 1981 have led to its staggering sales. While GTA 6 is set to make waves in the gaming industry, it is considered unlikely to ascend to the top spot and surpass Mario.
