Garbine Muguruza In Danger Of Missing Australian Open After Falling Sick

Garbine Muguruza has had a disappointing start to her 2020 season. The Spanish star has been forced to withdraw from Hobart International due to a viral illness.

She was playing her quarterfinal bout against Veronika Kudermetova and was trailing by a margin of 5-2.

This is bad news for Muguruza who’s had an unfortunate history of injuries in Australia. However, Muguruza expressed hope of returning for the Australian Open 2020 through her official Twitter account.

What Did Garbine Muguruza Say?

Garbine Muguruza was apologetic to her fans for not being able to perform. This is what she posted through her official Twitter account

“I’m sorry I can’t play today. I’ve been feverish for several days and this morning my body said enough. I’ll rest today and hope to travel to Melbourne tomorrow. I hope to be able to play Australian Open. I want to thank all Hobart fans for their support and love, I hope to return soon.”

What Has Been Mugurza’s history with injuries?

Garbine Muguruza has had a checkered past when it comes to injuries in Australia. The Spanish star had to pull out from round 2 in Sydney due to a gastrointestinal illness. She also withdrew from the quarters in Sydney in 2018 due to a thigh injury.

She also had to withdraw from the Brisbane international in 2017 and 2016 in the semi-finals and round 2 respectively. While she had a thigh injury in 2017, in 2016 she injured her foot.

Her withdrawal from Hobart is like a spooky addition to her series of disappointments in Australia. However, her fans will have their fingers crossed for the Australian Open.

2020 is hoped to be the year wherein the former world no 1 kickstarts her resurgence. She will look to go back to her glory years in the mid-2010s when she schooled Serena Williams in the second round of the French Open.
