The story of Mihoyo before Genshin Impact
No doubt, Genshin Impact is Mihoyo’s biggest game ever, but its journey started a long time ago. The studio, to this date, has been running independently, excluding a single angel investment of $150,000 that the studio took in the initial days. A group of college students formed the company, who were fans of anime, comic books and gaming culture (ACG).
They had a dream of building games that bridged all these genres into a single world. The group of friends worked with the slogan ‘Tech Otaku Save The World’ in mind to save the world of gaming and by staying true to their own otaku identity.

The company made 2D games in the initial phase and its first ever game was ‘Fly Me to the Moon’, which released in 2011. It was a basic side scroller game that followed the theme of the ACG culture and following up on that in 2014, the studio released ‘Gun Girlz’. This was a yet another side scroller, but it had a more intricate storyline and RPG elements that the previous game lacked. The company then released its first 3D Action RPG game ‘Honkai Impact’.

Honkai was a giant leap into the world of 3D games that was built on the positive aspects of the previous projects. It propelled them into popularity, making them one of the prominent names in the gaming industry. The success of ‘Honkai Impact’ played a vital role in creation of Genshin Impact. Without the success and failures of all three games, Genshin would not have been possible.
