Former NBA Pro JJ Redick Reveals Why Golf is the Greatest Sport

It is not out of the ordinary for an athlete of another sport to pick up golf as a stress buster. Legends like Michael Phelps, Michael Jordan, and Stephen Curry are known for their love of golf, and they take it more seriously than anything else. In a recent interview with golf.com, former NBA star JJ Redick spoke about golf at length – while also naming it the greatest sport in history.

JJ Redick has certainly formed an obsession with golf, the sport best suited for his competitive personality.

JJ Redick labels golf as the greatest sport in history

Months into retirement, and Redick has golf as something new to obsess over and play. He admitted that he needed something challenging in retirement. Golf satisfies his need of action and obsession, something which he needed desperately after he stopped playing professional basketball.

By the looks of it, Redick is completely taken with golf, easily labeling it the best sport. “This is why I think golf is the greatest sport,” he said. “You are competing no matter what you set up.”

He added that even if one is playing solo, member-member, member-guest, or with buddies on a Saturday, one is still playing. As per Redick, one is always playing against someone. This also includes the course, which might be a constant while other things keep changing.

How does golf make Redick feel?

“And with golf, because you’re keeping score and because there’s a handicap system, you’re always competing against yourself. You’re always doing that,” Redick added. He spoke about the anxiety one has of performing right at 7:44 AM, while also speaking of some experiences he has had.

“We’re the second non-accompanied group to go off at Cypress. You can’t use the driving range. The sun is barely up. It’s 43 degrees. There’s this breeze coming in off the ocean on the 1st hole. And you’re stepping up to the tee box having not hit a ball yet.”

According to Redick, that feeling is something that will never go away. He also talked about being a “total nerd”, which has him interested in things like golf course architecture.

Redick – who played in the NBA for over a decade – currently works as an NBA analyst. He started his journey with the Orlando Magic in 2006 and retired with the Dallas Mavericks in 2021. The New Orleans Pelicans, Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Milwaukee Bucks are other teams Redick has played for. The 37-year-old retired with an average of 12.8 PPG.
