Golf and MLB don’t often mix, but when they do, it leaves the public amused. This Thursday, it was the Philadelphia Phillies’ off day, so they came up with an excellent idea: find a spot for their fantasy football draft at Citizens Bank Park and shoot golf balls into a trash can up in the field. Trea Turner and Garrett Stubbs searched for the perfect spot and found it in the 300s. It was a handicapped seating area, which Stubbs called the “best and (a) somewhat obscure” spot for their endeavor.

“The @Phillies hit golf balls from the upper deck towards a trash can in center field to set their fantasy football draft order 🤣,” MLB wrote on Instagram while sharing pictures from the competition.
The Phillies finally carried out their unusual draft-order contest on Friday, just four and a half hours before the day’s game. The players grabbed a golf club and took turns trying to land their shots in the trash can. The outcome of the competition would decide the fantasy football draft order, with the best shot earning the top spot.
Kyle Schwarber came out on top, while Bryson Stott finished second and Garrett Stubbs took third. In total, 12 Phillies players took part in the competition. MLB teams have their own ways of deciding fantasy football draft positions, and some of them can be rather unconventional. The Blue Jays, for example, left the decision to their support staff.
Assistant pitching coach Sam Greene secured the No. 1 pick for Team Kaz Okamoto. Philadelphia, meanwhile, has opted to settle the matter with golf shots, although this isn’t the first time the Phillies have used the sport for the job. In previous years, their players have taken aim from home plate. In any case, this year’s contest also produced the most creative shot of the day.
Chase Shugart stole the spotlight by sending his ball into the State Farm sign near Monty’s Angle. For now, the Philadelphia Phillies are set to play a weekend series against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Regardless, when fans discovered the post from MLB, the comment section quickly turned into a comedy club.
“Groundskeeper absolutely hates them,” one user joked.
Someone else confessed, “[Brad Keller] is the best golfer on the Phillies hands down … guys a stick.”
The next user was happy about something else entirely. “I think the best part of this is seeing them without long pants and long sleeves 😂,” the user commented.
Another had a suggestion: “Learn to hit baseballs first before golf balls.”
Meanwhile, this user may have come up with a multi-million dollar idea. “This should be televised or shown to fans,” the user wrote.
While golf fans remain glued to the action at the BMW Championship at Bellerive Golf Course, the Phillies have provided their own source of entertainment. The team’s unconventional approach to deciding their fantasy football draft order has seemingly left fans thoroughly amused.
