After the stunning victory of Max Homa at the Farmers Insurance Open on Saturday, the interview had bits and pieces of sadness. He recalled the legend Kobe Bryant and the heartbreaking news that he would die in 2020.
After Jon Rahm expressed his regret at not being able to receive the answers from the NBA legend, it was time for Homa to dive deep and brink out his feelings for Brany in public.
The 32-year-old Los Angeles native was at the peak of his golf skills when he shot a final-round six-under-par 66 on the South Course at Torrey Pines to defeat Keegan Bradley by two strokes. Later, he talked about his devotion to the Dodgers, his frustration with Padres supporters, and his mic’d up experience with CBS on Friday. However, the kickback was the part about Bryant. However, the highlight was his learning from Bryant’s life. The pro could not hold himself back and shared why he admired the basketball legend.

What did the new champion, Max Homa, learn from the late Kobe Bryant?
Homa was back at Torrey Pines, where he and other golfers received the sad news of his demise in 2020. However, it was obvious what the PGA pro said about Bryant. “I actually thought about it, [of] him a little bit throughout the day.” He mentioned that this was the place where he received the tragic news, and therefore, the course gave him a ‘weird’ feeling in his stomach. He said, “I have a weird feeling about it. I love it, and it has like a weird sadness to it.”

Talking about the lessons he learned from Bryant’s game and life, Homa said, “What I learned from Kobe Bryant’s teachings and watching him work at his craft back in the day is he puts in all these hours behind the scenes so that when he’s on camera doing his thing, he can just let it happen.” Bryant was an amazing basketball player and a great father too. He tackled his personal and professional lives with perfection.

The Twitter GOAT further explained that he wanted to achieve a level in his game where he could ‘embrace’ the fun, crazy parts of golf mixed with the pressure of winning the tournament. Because he always saw Bryant accepting the best and worst parts of his sport and acing it like a legend. Homa wishes to walk in his footsteps.
