Despite not winning the US Open in his career, Mickelson’s statistics from the tournament are remarkable. He appears in the top 10 for the most appearances as well as the most podium finishes in the competition. However, a painstaking stat also reveals his record for the most runner-up finishes, with an unbelievable 6 second-place finishes.

Despite competing head-to-head for several years, 2023 Team USA captain in the Ryder Cup, golfer Zach Johnson, revealed he would be glad if Mickelson could win the US Open. “If I can’t win, I want one of my buddies to win. I would absolutely, 100 percent love to see Phil win. I think a lot of guys would, honestly,” he once said.

According to the two-time major championship winner, Mickelson was already “one of the best players ever to play the game” and deserved to win all four majors to complete a career grand slam. “Is it going to sway his legacy? I would say no. Would he have all four majors at that point? Yes, but he’s already one of the best players ever to play the game. I would just like to see him win it because he’s been close so many times,” he said. “He’s been a great U.S. Open player.”

Does Phil Mickelson deserve to win the US Open?

The 52-year-old has won 45 PGA Tour titles in his career, but none of them have been at the US Open. He has finished runner-up a record six times, thrice each as a solo second and as a joint second.

His first taste of narrowingly missing out on the title occurred at the 1999 US Open, where he finished a stroke behind the late Payne Stewart. At that time, the 29-year-old was considered one of the trailblazers in the sport, with many expecting him to win the title in the immediate future.
