The opening round of the PGA Championship proved how tough it is to play at the challenging golf course. Players like Tiger Woods had a good start but struggled to finish strong after the first round. The 15-time major champion ended the round on Thursday with an overall score of four-over-par (74) to claim the T-99 position on the leaderboard.

The scoring conditions on Day one proved how tough it was to go low at the venue. While the total scoring average close to par for the morning wave was +2.33, the scoring average for the afternoon wave or starters was +3.31. As the 36-hole cutline will be enforced after the second round ends on Friday, only the top 70 professionals and ties will be able to move on to the weekend.
Let’s look at some of the cutline predictions as the event heads into the second round.

According to Datagolf, the top three cutline predictions for the major championship event are three-over-par. The cutline of three-over-par has the lowest probability of 18 percent, followed by five-over-par, which has a chance of 30.6 percent. Four-over-par has the highest probability of 40.9 percent.
Not to forget, ball striking and club selection are important at Southern Hills, along with delicate touch around the green. Driving the ball well is the key to success, followed by a good approach game. Moreover, the par 4 second hole, which is 500 yards long, is one of the demanding holes which requires professionals to drive the ball nicely.
The par 4 12th hole, measuring 456 yards, is a dogleg to the left. It has a creek behind the green and can be problematic for those hitting from the right rough and, as a result, making the golf course even more challenging. Considering all the factors, seeing how many players make the cut will be interesting.

Phil Mickelson is the defending champion this week at the second major championship event of the year. He ended the event in 2021 with an overall score of six-under-par to win with a two-shot lead. With his win at the Ocean Course last year, ‘Lefty’ won the 2021 PGA Championship at 50 and broke Julius Boros’ record to become the oldest major championship winner.
His final round of 73 included three birdies and three bogeys on the opening nine holes. As a result, the ‘Lefty’ moved out on par. He made two birdies and three bogeys on the back nine to wrap up his final round.
