Following the RBC Heritage and the Mexico Championship, golf is headed to Maryland for the very exciting 2022 Wells Fargo Championship. Having been around since 2003, the event is one of the many golf events which began relatively recently. Of course, just a few weeks ahead of the PGA Championship, the Wells Fargo event becomes crucial for a player.

The tournament is taking place at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, which is located in Maryland. Hosting the event for the first time since its inception, the venue will surely offer a completely different experience than the previous editions in North Carolina. The course is a par-70 course, stretching over 7000 yards.

Furthermore, they have hosted events like the Quicken Loans National and the Neediest Kids Championship prior to the Wells Fargo Championship. The tournament has also raised millions for charity and has donated a total of $22 million.

Wells Fargo, on their end, have been sponsoring the event for some time. They are in a contract with the Tour, which extends their partnership till 2024. Over 2000 people volunteer, making it an important event in the community and golf world at the same time.

Who won the last edition?

Rory McIlroy won the 2021 edition, making it his third win at the event. It was his 19th PGA Tour win, making him the only person to win multiple times at the Wells Fargo Championship. Max Homa, Jason Day, and Rickie Fowler are a few other PGA Tour players who have won.

Winners payout at the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship

As per reports, the total prize purse for this event will be $9 million. Not only does this promise $1.62 million for the winner, but it also means an increase in prize money since 2021. Of course, players are expected to win an exception along with berths for other PGA Tour tournaments.
