2023 Genesis Invitational Cutline Prediction: How Many Golfers Will Make it to the Weekend?

The initial two rounds of the PGA Tour’s Genesis Open have concluded. While there has been plenty of mouth-watering action across two days, more than half of the field will be cut from the tournament. But what score will determine the exclusion of those golfers, and which star names could potentially head home early?

Despite going through harsh conditions throughout the week, where temperatures remained sub-par, the field of 135 has played at its best. Many of the top-ranking golfers are on course to play at the weekend, while some others have struggled with their scores.

According to Data Golf, a data-tracking website, the cut line probabilities, which vary over time, stood highest at one-over par. The site showed a 74% chance of the tournament organizers excluding players with a score above that.

The news would be music to the ears of many, including golf legend, Tiger Woods. The 15-times major championship winner was set to finish under par before a late struggle pushed him out. This is Woods’ first competitive appearance on the PGA Tour after 884 days, and he’d be hoping to continue his stay at the Genesis Open.

Which other players are at a risk of exclusion?

After a comeback of sorts at the WM Phoenix Open, former World No.1, Jordan Spieth, looks set to head home early. The 29-year-old shot a disastrous three-over par on Thursday, which proved too hot to handle even after a decent performance in the following round.

While the official confirmation of the cut line will be announced later, an exit for Spieth is on the cards. But last year’s U.S. Open champion, Matt Fitzpatrick, could join him too. A year younger than Spieth, he carded two-over par at the start, which proved costly.

But while the American duo dug their graves in the first round itself, 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama had a forgetful second day’s display. After settling for par in the first round, the Japanese golfer shot a disappointing two-over-par, which likely puts him outside the cut line.
