The prestigious Solheim Cup, a team event for women golfers, will take place in Spain in September 2023. Since there is almost a year left for the event, no captains are in a rush to find the right fit for their team. However, the recent revelation of Stacy Lewis, the Team USA captain, implies that she has already started to form her team and is already eyeing two rookies for it.

“Yeah, definitely Lilia and Andrea,” Lewis told the press. “I think they’ve caught everybody’s eyes.” The two-time major champion disclosed how she kept both the young players on her radar and is analyzing them to find their capability to be part of the team. 

“I mean, they jump up that points list really fast,” she added. Notably, Lilia Vu and Andrea Lee, whom Lewis is talking about in the video, are in the Top 10 players on the Solheim Cup table for American players. While Vu is at the fifth rank with 178.00 points, Lee decorates the sixth position on the rankings list with 176.00 points. 

Notably, other than Lexi ThompsonDanielle KangJennifer Kupcho, and Nelly Korda, no other players from last year’s Solheim Cup could rank higher than Lee and Vu.

Lewis revealed how she felt about both young golfers being on top of the Solheim Cup points table during the Pelican Women’s Championship press meet. “Lilia was very impressive,” the Team USA captain said in the interview. “The 63 she shot final round in Dallas was really impressive.”

Lilia Vu, the 25-year-old golfer, played The Ascendant LPGA benefiting Volunteers of America in Dallas in September. And she scored an impressive 8-under 63 in its final round. Her career-best round helped her finish T11 in the tournament. 

On the other hand, Andrea Lee’s victory at the 2022 AmazingCre Portland Classic made Lewis her fan. She won the event by scoring an overall 19-under 269 and grabbed the title. 

How does Team USA pick team members for the Solheim Cup? 

Unlike any other event, the captain has to choose wisely her team members, since it is a matter of the country’s pride. Therefore, Team USA captains and vice captains follow three steps to pick their players.

1. The top 7 players on the Solheim Cup points table at the end of the Qualifying Period. If there is a tie, whoever has the higher Rolex ranking will advance. 

2. The top 2 players on the world ranking list who are not already on the above-mentioned list. Whoever has the higher ranking on the Solheim points table will advance in case there is a tie between players. 

3. US Team captain can pick three other players, as per her liking, to complete the 12-member team.
